A WHO’S who of our Hollywood stars are coming together for a movie that could be the Aussiest ever! But one name is missing.

TOURISM Australia is going to have to bust out a new education campaign for our American friends — as the new animated movie Larrikins is set to bring a big dose of Aussie humour and our hard-to-understand slang to Hollywood.

A rock’n’roll musical co-directed by Aussie comedian and Matilda the Musical mastermind Tim Minchin, Larrikins revealed its lead voice cast overnight — and it’s pretty much a who’s who of the Aussie invasion of Hollywood.

All that’s missing is a Hemsworth.

Margot Robbie, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Jacki Weaver, Josh Lawson, Damon Herriman and Ewen Leslie will all provide their voices to the story of a bilby who goes on an Outback road trip with a band after being kicked out of home by his parents.

Minchin, who is also composing all the songs and music for Larrikins, has been working on the film with Hollywood studio DreamWorks Animation (Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Madagascar) for several years.

In 2014 he told The Daily Telegraph he was “trying to make it as authentically Australian as possible”.

That included wanting “a full Australian cast with Aboriginal actors as well ... because we have Aboriginal elements to the story”.

In reporting the casting news, US film industry website Deadline described the word larrikin as “Aussie slang for ‘maverick’ or ‘rebel’ ”.

We’d say it’s more cheeky and mischievous, taking nothing too seriously and having the occasional disregard for authority.

Larrikins is currently scheduled for a January 2018 cinema release.
