It’s basically the fashion equivalent of the Oscars – Anna Wintour’s annual Met Gala in New York City.
A newly-blonde Kim Kardashian wore the $5 million dress Marilyn Monroe sported when she sang happy birthday to then-US President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
Speaking to US Vogue, Kardashian revealed the gown came with security guards and it originally didn’t fit and she had to lose weight in “three weeks”.
“This is Marilyn Monroe’s dress – it’s 60 years old. She wore this when she sang happy birthday to President John F Kennedy,” Kardashian told Vogue.
“It came with armed guards and gloves. It didn’t fit me. I said, give me three weeks and I had to lose 16 pounds down today to be able to fit this. It was such a challenge … I was determined to fit it.”
Kim continued: “Nowadays everyone wears sheer dresses, but back then that was not the case”.
“In a sense, it’s the original naked dress. That’s why it was so shocking.” She also revealed what it took to transform herself into Monroe’s blonde. “I’m spending the whole day just dyeing my hair, 14 hours straight,” Kim told US Vogue.
Monroe’s dress was made by French-born Hollywood costume designer Jean-Louis, based on a sketch by Bob Mackie, per Vogue, featuring 6000 hand-sewn crystals. It was sold for $4.8 million in 2016, then acquired by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum after that. So how did Kim come to wear it?
“I’m a big fan of auctions and I own several JFK pieces so I know the owner of Julien’s. He was able to connect me [with Ripley’s] and that’s how the conversation started,” Kim told Vogue.
For the first time, all the Kardashian-Jenners were in attendance, including Kourtney and Khloe who were previously snubbed from the guest list.
Attending her first Met Gala, Kourtney Kardashian told Vogue she was wearing a “deconstructed” version of her fiance Travis Barker’s Thom Browne suit.
Supermodel Kendall Jenner raised eyebrows due to her absent everybrows, which had been bleached to the point of invisibility.
STEPS OF THE MET
Dressed in an ivory silk Saint Laurent halter dress, Hailey Bieber continued the Hollywood glamour theme teaming the gown with an ostrich feather cape, while Bella Hadid went sexy in leather Burberry.
Fredrik Robertsson, wearing a spiked Iris van Herpen outfit, caused confusion when he was widely misidentified as Jared Leto – who was at the Met Gala, but actually wearing Gucci and he matched with the Italian fashion house’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.
In a scene reminiscent of her Gossip Girl era, Blake Lively turned heads in a custom Versace gown, with details inspired by the roof at NYC’s Grand Central Station.
This year’s theme is “gilded glamour”, inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”.
This year marks the Met Gala’s return to its traditional first Monday in May slot after two years of Covid chaos (last year’s event was held semi-recently, in September).
The event is being hosted by Regina King, Lin Manuel-Miranda, as well as Lively, and her husband, Ryan Reynolds.
Wearing a striped Christopher John Rogers dress and Carrie Bradshaw-esque headpiece, Sarah Jessica Parker told Vogue: “Rules have been broken a little bit”.
