Logies 2019: The biggest fashion shockers from TV's big night
The Logies have long been known for fashion disasters. And no one - no matter how famous - is immune. Here are the shockers that the stars would probably rather forget.
From Nicole Kidman's blue taffeta number to Margot Robbie's tangerine nightmare, the Logies never fail to disappoint when it comes to fashion shockers.
In the past, the Logies used to be an occasion for frizzy perms, unflattering necklines and poorly-applied fake tan from D-list Australian TV “celebrities”.
Now, it’s turned into a real fashion show with top Australian stylists and designers dressing increasingly style-conscious starlets.
But there are some Logies shockers that we just can’t forget. And some stars — even as recently as 2018 — still couldn’t get it right.
Playing for Keeps star Olympia Valance made a suitably dramatic entrance at last year's Logies wearing a Con Ilio gown that was part Grecian goddess, part Game of Thrones. The intricate lace ensemble - complete with choker and bodice - was also really, really big.
Former Neighbours star-turned-Oscar-nominee Robbie sported a strapless, ruffled black and orange dress with a mullet hemline and thick, black platform heels to the Logies in 2009.
It was a far cry from the sleek Saint Laurent and Gucci dresses Robbie has worn to Hollywood awards ceremonies.
In the ’80s, Nicole Kidman and her sister Antonia walked the Logies red carpet as rising stars of the Australian television industry, wearing various shades of blue ruffle that was probably very on-trend for 1987.
Unfortunately, their blue-on-blue frocks do not hold up.
Not even last year’s Logies red carpet was safe from fashion misses, including Today newsreader Sylvia Jefferys whose dusty pink frock — designed by Rebecca Vallance — was compared to a … vagina.
“I should apologise, a few people are in a flap over it,” Jefferys said on Today the morning after the 2017 Logies.
“Apparently there have been some unflattering comparisons, nothing controversial intended,” she added.
“I wouldn’t have thought there was anything controversial about a ruffle, but there you go.”
As usual, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, who went into the Hall of Fame, went for the more is better approach with her gown.
They’ve come a long way but back in 2002, Kate Langbroek rocked up to the Logies in a strapless gold gown and blonde and brown curls with a fur wrap. Hughesy wasn’t wearing a tux, tie or a shirt that was tucked in.
Dannii Minogue and Melissa George are super stylish now. That was not the case when they attended the Logies earlier on in their careers.
A serial offender of bad Logies looks is daytime TV presenter Susie Elelman, who has consistently provided the event with shocking frocks that made viewers look twice for all the wrong reasons.
Barbie look-alike super babe Brynne Gordon has always turned heads on the red carpet. She goes gone OTT with her outfits — more glitz to her idea of glamour. This outfit she wore here says it all.
But it’s not just errors in sartorial judgment that raise eyebrows at the Logies. Sometimes it’s showing too much flesh or, in Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune’s case, bad ringlets circa 1997.
Neighbours star Madeleine West seemingly took on the Logie Award gold colour for one of her gowns, but nearly popped out of her dress in 2005.
Her Neighbours co-star Stephanie McIntosh failed to impress in this cut-out gown, as did Toni Pearen, whose barely-there red gown with no underwear needed some work to make it a red-hot hit.
The 60th Annual TV Week Logie Awards are on July 1 on the Nine Network.
