Liam Neeson has been spotted barrelling down Altona Pier as the Irish action hero films his latest Hollywood blockbuster.
The 72-year-old actor who has starred in Taken, Star Wars and Schindler’s List is in pre-production for The Mongoose – an action thriller being shot in Melbourne.
On Tuesday afternoon, Altona’s beach and main street were closed to the public as Neeson, and his roof-mounted stunt driver, fanged down the pier in a jet black Ford Mustang.
In the film, Neeson plays Ryan ‘Fang’ Flanagan – a war hero on an epic cross-country car chase for a crime he didn’t commit.
The Altona Pier scene is believed to be the final moment in the film, with Neeson’s character driving along with nowhere left to go.
The Mongoose also features Hollywood heavyweight Marisa Tomei.
It is the third film Neeson has shot in Victoria in as little as four years following Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky (2023) and Blacklight (2020).
All three productions have been a substantial boost for Victoria with Ice Road 2 and Blacklight generating over 1300 jobs and $55m.
This latest production is expected to create over 450 jobs for Victoria screen workers in addition to pumping more than $19m into the state’s economy.
Melburnians have a chance of spotting Neeson as he dangles from helicopters and revs supercars across Altona, Bacchus Marsh, Castlemaine, Bangholme, North Melbourne, Kensington, Moorabbin and the city’s CBD.
Victoria has recently become an attractive destination for Hollywood filmmaking through targeted funding and support efforts from the Victorian government.
Melbourne filmmaking burst into mainstream cinema in December with the release of Better Man, the simian themed musical biopic of English pop star Robbie Williams.
