JULIAN McMahon and Radha Mitchell stepped back in time with Kylie Minogue on the Gold Coast yesterday as the 1970s swung back into glorious action.
The trio were all spied on set in Southport for the first day of filming on Flammable Children, a colourful new Aussie comedy movie written and directed by Stephan Elliott.
The production made the most of a pupil-free day in Queensland State schools to set up base in Melrose Park, opposite Southport High School, and shoot scenes in and around a house in nearby Mole Ave.
The shoot involved principal cast members Minogue, McMahon and Mitchell, a couple of Matlock Police-inspired cops in an original Ford GT 351 Falcon, kids in school uniform, women in white tennis garb, mop-haired grommets decked out in short floral boardies and an overweight golden retriever dog.
Billed as “a love letter to a world of careless parenting, constant sunburn and unsupervised activities”, Flammable Children is setin“a typical Australian beachside neighbourhood” during the 1970s.
Offspring’s Asher Keddie and Last Cab To Darwin’s Jeremy Sims also feature in the film, with newcomer Atticus Robb as hormonal 14-year-old Jeff and Darcey Wilson (The Dressmaker) as the girl he has a crush on, next-door neighbour Melly.
Flammable Children reunites actress and singer Minogue with her former Neighbours castmate Guy Pearce and one-time brother-in-law McMahon, who was married to her younger sister Dannii Minogue from 1994—1995.
Nip Tuck star McMahon, the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir William McMahon and Lady Sonia McMahon, sported enormous sideburns and a fake moustache and was decked out in blue bell-botton pants and a tight, wide-collared polyester shirt for one scene.
Mitchell was almost unrecognisable in a dark bouffant-styled wig, flared denim jumpsuit with wide belt and oversized Jackie Onassis signature sunnies.
The duo oozed retro cool as they strutted along a 200m stretch of Brooke Ave from their dressing rooms to the set — the balcony and front yard of a classic 1970s-style split-level brick house with a flesh-coloured Kingswood with vinyl roof and venetian blinds in its driveway.
Flammable Children boasts several key cast and crew from Elliott’s hit 1994 drag queen road-movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, including Pearce, Oscar and BAFTA award-winning production designer Colin Gibson (Mad Max: Fury Road), BAFTA and Tony award-winning costume designer Lizzy Gardiner and producer Al Clark.
