“I blame you guys.”
Surprise, surprise. Instead of taking the hit, shock jock Kyle Sandilands has unleashed on his own bosses for his show’s woeful Melbourne ratings while calling his breakfast number one rival Jase Hawkins “his b***h”.
In a no holds barred rant delivered directly to media buyers, executives and advertisers at industry IMAA Sound Bites event in Sydney on Thursday, Sandilands did not miss.
Sandilands said the Melbourne experience has been “just a disaster”.
“Well, I blame you guys, in all honesty,” Sandilands said.
“I blame you guys. What we should have done is roll this out nationally from day one. Put our balls in our hand and f***ing moved forward.”
His comments were reportedly directed towards executives from the Australian Radio Network (ARN), which syndicates the KIIS FM Kyle & Jackie O Show.
“None of this like, oh, put your little toe in the water. We should have blasted us nationally from day one and just spent millions of dollars on marketing,” Mediaweek reported.
From a Melbourne stand point it sure felt like they did spend millions in marketing after expanding their breakfast show here after signing a huge $200 million deal to stay with ARN and KIIS for another decade in 2023.
But listeners were put off from the get go by the show’s sleazy sexual content, with their highly publicised campaign failing to find lift off, limping at fifth place with a measly 5 per cent market share.
Taking over from Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, who were unceremoniously sent packing from KIIS in a shock exit, the Melbourne duo have since had the last laugh.
The Jase and Lauren show has since propelled to number one spot in the ratings since moving to Nova, and Sandilands could not resist spraying them on his way out too.
“Now, I know Jase. He was my b***h for about 20 years in radio. Taught him everything. Met him when he was 16. He’s a good operator. But that’s going to wear thin,” he said.
But it is Sandilands own words which are wearing thin.
