Spartan may be preparing to stop contestants from reaching the top of the pyramid, but the man behind the Gladiator has perhaps a tougher task at hand … finding love.
Khan Porter is the new generation of “21st century superhero” for the reboot of the iconic show, Gladiators.
The remake of the hit 90s program sees athletes battle everyday contestants in tests of speed, strength, stamina and skill.
Outside of the Gladiators arena however, Porter – who is currently single, is ready to “settle down”, after living overseas for the past two years.
“I came back to Australia specifically for Gladiators (but) I think a big part of coming home was to open myself up to finding someone and transitioning into that wholesome, new chapter in my life,” he told Confidential.
“I certainly didn’t go on Gladiators to find love (but) at the moment I would say I’m open to the idea of it.
The Sydney local said he is hoping to find a partner he can be his “most authentic self with.”
“I love a deep conversation, someone that is a deep thinker, who feels comfortable being their most authentic self,” he said.
“This chapter in my life is very much about repairing my relationship with myself, so (I want) someone that makes me feel safe to continue that journey and also has that silly, goofy, cheeky side to them as well.”
Despite saying his match will likely not be met in the arena, Porter said “you never know where you are going to find the one.”
“I could see her getting tackled off the top of the pyramid and think ‘woah, hang on a second’,” he joked.
“I love the journey that it’s (Gladiators) taking me on so far and I’m really excited to see where that continues, whether it is finding love or whatever.”
Porter has spent the last eleven years competing worldwide at the highest level of CrossFit, an asset he plans to take into the arena.
“He (Spartan) has that playful, fun nature outside of competition but once the whistle goes and it’s ‘three, two, one’, he will try to win however he can,” he said.
“For me, the process of competing involves being able to step into that competitive mindset but have the best time along the way and that’s where that playful, joking nature comes into it and that’s very much who I am. It made stepping into that role really easy.”
Working alongside eleven athletes in what is being described as the “ultimate David vs. Goliath battle”, Porter said he was feeling the pressure to uphold the beloved series’ reputation.
“Gladiators was an iconic show when I was growing up and something I remember sitting down as a family on the couch (watching),” he said.
“There’s definitely pressure. With a reboot of the show comes a lot of expectation from diehard fans.
“I’m excited because I believe we live up to the expectation.”
Gladiators premieres on 10 and 10 play on Jan 15.
