Actor Joel Edgerton is set to become a dad, with his girlfriend, Vogue Australia’s fashion director, unusually wearing casual clothing heralding the pregnancy, writes Annette Sharp.

Joel Edgerton and his fashionista partner Christine Centenera are to become first-time parents with a much-wanted baby on the way.

Centenera was barely able to conceal a bump during a shopping trip to Paddington on Thursday when she was photographed shopping at The Intersection retail precinct.

The mother-to-be, almost 40, is in her second trimester, say well-placed sources.

Edgerton, the Blacktown-born star of Hollywood films Red Sparrow and Loving, but who once said he was happiest when at home in Sydney working on personal side projects, is understood to be thrilled that he and Centenera will soon become parents.

Friends say the pair have been playing it safe with their still-early-days pregnancy, not their first attempt to start a family it’s understood.

Known for her obsession with fitted bodycon clothing and her celebrity clients, Vogue Australia’s celebrated fashion director has been dressing with uncharacteristic comfort in recent weeks, raising eyebrows and heightening pregnancy speculation.

There was a time when the uber-stylist wouldn’t have been seen dead in a pair of elastic bike pants and a shapeless grey T-shirt.

Centenera’s appearance in such an ensemble last month set tongues flapping.

At 46, Edgerton, who directed the critically acclaimed Boy Erased in 2018, has, for a quarter of a century, prioritised work over marriage and family.

The TV actor and stuntman-turned-director/writer/producer has dated a string of famous women through the years, notably Olympian Cathy Freeman, actor Robin McLeavy, Anthony Kiedis’ ex-girlfriend model Wanessa Milhomem, Bachelor contestant and Cosmopolitan magazine stylist Juliette Herrera, and model Alexis Blake.

Adelaide-born Centenera, whose previous long-term relationship of seven years was with fashion designer and collaborator Josh Groot, moved to New York a decade ago to make her name on the international stage.

She was an instant success after being retained by Kanye West, who reportedly asked Centenera to go to work on a fashion refurb on his then new girlfriend, Kim Kardashian.

Now back home in Australia, Sydney — and parenthood — have become Centenera’s new focus.
