Jason Derulo’s plan to build a billion-dollar business empire

With billions of streams to his name, singer and now Voice Australia judge Jason Derulo hopes to replicate his music success to become a billionaire businessman.

Pop star Jason Derulo already counts in billions the number of streams for his swag of hit singles.

Now the newly-minted Voice Australia coach hopes to replicate his music success to become a billionaire businessman.

In his motivational book Sing Your Name Out Loud, the 33-year-old entertainer reveals he lost $600,000 with his first investments in alcohol and clothing brands after drawing inspiration by the success of Jay-Z and P. Diddy, who built empires around their music endeavours.

That initial failure in businesses many musicians align with spurred him to do his “due diligence” into potential new “non-traditional” ventures which are now paying off.

He put money into in the Rocket Car Wash, a monthly subscription for unlimited car washes which he is exploring expanding to Australia, and other healthcare, fitness and volleyball ventures, with one company valued at more than $2 billion.

“The car wash (business), it’s working like crazy. It’s unbelievable, it’s definitely taking over all of America,” he said.

“I’ve had way more failures than I had successes, but the successes reaped way more benefits than the failure reaped negativity. All you really need is one big win, and everybody forgets the losses.”

The book is titled after Derulo’s trademark of singing his name in some of his biggest hits, including In My Head, Don’t Wanna Go Home and Take You Dancing.

The “tradition” started with his debut single Whatcha Say in 2009, when the then 19-year-old pop aspirant with dreams of becoming the next Michael Jackson followed the cue of rappers who self-name dropped on their tracks.

As well as generating millions of memes, parodies and now TikTok videos, the gamble paid off with 24 platinum and multi-platinum singles and 650 million streams in Australia alone.

“It’s something that I started to kind of get my name out there. But it became something totally otherworldly,” he said.

“I think probably the most powerful reason it worked is the fact that melody is king, it’s what sticks in our minds, and (my) melody was really strong.

“And the second thing is, they were just massive, massive songs and (singing my name) was the one constant thing within this string of songs.

“Even when I’m doing a live performance, whenever I say my name, people go crazy.”

In his “15 rules for living your dream”, Derulo explained how he took on his first role as a television talent quest judge in So You Think You Can Dance in America to improve his skills of speaking in front of an audience.

“But, since then, I’ve turned down a slew of offers to appear on similar shows. I had already extracted what I needed from this experience, so it was more beneficial for me to spend that time focusing on my music,” he writes.

Until The Voice Australia came calling this year for him to fill the red chair vacated by Keith Urban and he launched his own franchise called Project Icon in the UK.

“Life has a crazy way of proving you wrong sometimes; you may think a chapter is over until another door opens. That’s a great opportunity and I love Australia, I think this place is a magical place,” he said.

“Getting to spend some real time here, I think, is a huge win in itself.”

Like other international Voice judges before him, including Boy George, Ricky Martin and current coach Rita Ora, Derulo said he had been blown away by the level of talented singers taking their shot in this year’s season.

And he hopes to work with one or two lucky singers when the show wraps this year.

“It’s really inspired me in a totally different way that I don’t think So You think to Dance could have done because that’s about dancing and this is about music and singing,” he said.

“I definitely have my eyes set on one or two of the artists; they keep saying that this has been the best year in terms of the talent, and it has to be, because I was just shocked.”
