RIHANNA’s no-show at the Grammy Awards was one of the biggest disappointments of the night.
While she was scheduled to performed Kiss It Better from her new album Anti for the first time at yesterday’s ceremony, she was ordered by a doctor to go on immediate vocal rest. She pulled the pin at the last minute.
But despite her absence, she had major things planned. And talk show host James Corden, who was meant to feature in her performance, has spilt the beans on exactly what audiences were supposed to witness.
“A couple of weeks ago, I was asked if I would introduce Rihanna on the show,” Corden said on his Late Late Show after the Grammy Awards. “So I get this phone call saying, ‘Rihanna’s got this big thing planned for her song Kiss It Better, and she’s doing like a whole eighties talk show thing. It’s going to be really cool and what she wants you to do is be like an eighties talk show.’”
Corden said the pair rehearsed the performance over the weekend, and he noted the singer seemed “under the weather”.
And when the big day arrived, Corden didn’t find out the performance had been cancelled until he was about to walk into the ceremony.
“Today, I got all dressed up, a guy came and measured me for an eighties suit, drive down there, get there, do the red carpet, saying, ‘I’m introducing Rihanna, she asked me personally to be part of it, it’s amazing,’” Corden explained. “And then I get to the end of the red carpet and they say, ‘Rihanna has had to pull out of the show. She’s pulled out, she’s been told by a doctor she’s not allowed to sing, it could really damage her voice.’”
Corden saw Rihanna’s cancellation as his moment to shine.
He joked to producers: “I hear what you’re saying. Yes, I’ll fill the spot. Luckily, I’d just had a wax.”
Needless to say, they didn’t take him up on the offer.
