HE might have been ‘the one from The Project who didn’t get a Gold Logie nomination’, but Pete Helliar joined forces with Kitty Flanagan to steal the show at the Logies.

Lining up as presenters before what is often the toughest crowd in television, the duo skewered themselves, the event, reality cooking shows and 60 Minutes to riotous laughter.

But MasterChef’s George Calombaris wasn’t laughing.

Flanagan, wearing a black-and white cocktail-style suit, said she was ‘just up here to ask people to stop trying to order food and drinks from me” before picking out Ita Buttrose in the audience, “but table 47, yes, Ita, I will bring you one more round of Jaegar bombs and then cutting you off. It’s a long night, pace yourself woman, pace yourself.”

Helliar bagged his The Project co-hosts, Gold Logie nominees Carrie Bickmore and Waleed Aly, inviting him to swing by his table down the back.

“It’s a great table, a lot of wonderful competition winners,” Helliar continued.

“Great to catch up with the kids on Cheese TV ... I don’t mean to brag, but I’m also sitting with some of the highest selling news agents in rural Australia. Garrick from Lismore, this one is for you.”

He wished Bickmore and Aly a final ‘good luck’ before Flanagan asked who his money was on for the Gold Logie.

“Lee Lin Chin,” Helliar replied.

“Oh, Pete, you bet ya. Who doesn’t love that whack job,” Flanagan returned.

Flanagan then took aim at cooking-based reality television.

“I just want to let the kids know that if you want to be a chef, you can go to a place called TAFE. It’s pretty easy to get in,” she said.

“I keep seeing all these people on MasterChef, My Kitchen Rules: ‘Cooking has always been my dream’.

“I wish someone told them about TAFE. Obviously TAFE is a little bit different. “You will learn to cook with ingredients and utensils rather than cooking with your heart.

“You will also learn to put food on the plate rather than putting yourself on the plate.

“And ... if one more of you says you’re going to smash it out of the park, I’m going to smash you out of the park.”

MasterChef judge George Calombaris looked unimpressed, but the audience loved it.

Helliar closed proceedings with a warning to Ky Baldwin, the young winner of the Graham Kennedy Breakthrough Star of Tomorrow award.

“My advice, your first Logies, don’t drink with Karl Stefanovic, don’t dance with Bickmore, and don’t accept a lift home from the ‘60 Minutes’ crew, OK,” he said.

“Although you may not have a choice.”
