Host Mel Tracina on Big Brother's 'electric' finale and hit Queensland return
The host of Big Brother has opened up on the show’s return to Qld – and why we need to “expect the unexpected”.
Big Brother’s revival comes to a close Monday night, ending a condensed but high-energy season that has firmly re-anchored the TV franchise in Queensland.
For host Mel Tracina, who has spent the past month calling Dreamworld home, the finale brings mixed emotions.
“I’ve had so much fun, and I’ve loved watching the housemates just like all of Australia has,” she said.
“Absolutely, I wanted it to go for longer.
“I’ve also loved being in Queensland, so I’m sad that that’s coming to an end for me.”
The show’s return to the Gold Coast has proven a winning move, with crowds packing into Dreamworld’s live arena each week.
Tracina said the theme park setting injected a new level of energy into the production.
“The theme park has been such a fun place to do it,” she said.
“It’s all electric and it just feels like that energy radiates into the house and from the house into the live shows.”
That excitement wasn’t confined to the stage.
Dreamworld’s Tail Spin ride became an unlikely star, with fans yelling updates mid-air and TikTok viewers coordinating what messages should be shouted into the yard.
“People were literally going on the Tail Spin and asking TikTok, ‘what message do you want me to give the housemates?’” Tracina said.
“It’s interesting to see how the Australian public have tried to engage in every way they can.”
Much of the classic Big Brother spirit, she said, came from her on-stage partnership with show veteran Mike Goldman.
“He’s been so much fun at the live shows,” she said.
“His energy, his love for the show, how much he rallies behind the housemates.”
■ Big Brother’s biggest shocks and scandals
“We’ve been doing dance-offs, giving away merch, getting the crowd revved up.”
Despite her Melbourne roots, Queensland left a strong impression.
“The weather has been so good, and I love how active everyone is,” she said.
And her promise for the finale?
“Big Brother has been about expecting the unexpected, and (the final) is no different. You do not want to miss it,” she said.
The Big Brother Australia finale airs Monday night where one of two Queenslanders could be crowned the 2025 winner.
