Grammy Awards 2020: Winners, nominees and performances

Pop sensation Billie Eilish sported a custom-made Gucci tracksuit as she partied in Los Angeles after the Grammy Awards.

Grammys 2020: Heartwarming tributes to Kobe Bryant

It’s a head-to-toe Gucci outfit only Billie Eilish could pull off.

The Bad Guy singer sported a custom-made tracksuit as she partied the night away in Los Angeles after the Grammys, where she won five awards.

The 18-year-old posed at Universal’s official after-party in Los Angeles wearing her third Gucci outfit of the night – an oversized hoody teamed with matching pants, and a collared tee underneath, worth more than $10,000.

Both Eilish and her brother/collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, wore custom Gucci crystal GG embroidered pieces designed by the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.

She accessorised the purple-and-navy look with a pair of Gucci sunglasses and a pair of $A2000 sneakers, as well as her Gucci-branded green manicure.

She completed her look with Gucci “high jewelry” pieces that were also designed by Michele.

There were a string of Grammys after parties held in Los Angeles after the emotional ceremony at the Staples Center, which was dedicated to the late Kobe Bryant.

Diplo, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend rubbed shoulders at Sony’s startstudded bash afterwards at NeueHouse in Hollywood.

Of course, Diplo continued his cowboy-themed trend from earlier in the night, when he performed Old Town Road with Lil Nas X.

‘I AM SO GRATEFUL’

Earlier, Eilish won the coveted Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year awards at the Grammys.

Song of the Year – of which Eilish won for Bad Guy – was one of the most eclectic nomination fields in Grammys history, which included Taylor Swift, Tanya Tucker, Lizzo and Lewis Capaldi.

Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was named Album of the Year, and she was also won Record of the Year for Bad Guy, and Best New Artist.

The Los Angeles-raised teen won another award in the pre-telecast ceremony, Best Engineered Album, while her brother/collaborator Finneas won Producer of the Year.

Eilish, who turned 18 in December, is the youngest artist ever to win Song of the Year.

“I feel like I joke around and never take anything seriously (at awards) but I genuinely want to say I am so grateful, so honoured to be here among all of you,” she said.

Even with one of the most diverse field in Best New Talent history, it always felt like Eilish had that award in the bag. But Eilish joked that her award her win would not be popular

among the hardcore fan bases of her fellow nominees.

After dedicating the award to her own fans, Eilish congratulated her fellow nominees and the hardcore devotion of their followers.

“I know your fans are hardcore and are going to fight for you and they are going to talk s*** about me for years,” she said, smiling. “I love all fanbases...you guys make this all worth it.”

Eilish’s Grammy win came after Bad Guy topped Triple J’s Hottest 100 on Saturday.

EMOTIONAL TRIBUTES TO KOBE

The Grammys have been dominated by emotionally-charged tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, after his shock death today.

Host Alicia Keys addressed the crowd at Grammys venue the Staples Center, which was Bryant’s home court.

The death of the 41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers legend has been a big topic at the 62nd annual awards ceremony, only hours after it was reported he had died alongside his daughter, Gianna Maria, 13, and seven others.

Opening the Grammys, Keys said she was “standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built”, referring to the famous LA-based NBA stadium.

She spoke of the basketballer’s tragic death with her opening monologue, before an a cappella performance with Boyz II Men that was dedicated to Bryant.

“Here we are on music’s biggest night celebrating the artists that do it best,” Keys said.

“But to be honest, we are feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today, Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero.

“We are literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe built,” Keys added.

“Right now, Kobe and his daughter Gianna and all of those people who have been tragically lost today are in our spirit, in our hearts, they are in our prayers, they are in this building.

“I would like to ask everybody to take a minute and hold them inside and share our strength and support with their families.”

Juice singer Lizzo opened the Grammys with an electric performance by dedicating it to Bryant.

“Tonight is for Kobe” before she poured her heart into a beautiful, medley culminating with her hit Truth Hurts and signature flute solo.

Then, accepting a Grammy onstage, Lizzo touched on Kobe’s shock death again. “This whole week, I’ve been lost in my problems, stressed out, and then in an instant, all of that can go away and your priorities really shift,” Lizzo said, as she collected her Grammy for Pop Solo Performance.

“Today, all of my little problems I thought were the biggest in the world were gone, and I realised that there’s people hurting right now,” she added.

She wasn’t the only Grammys star to pay tribute to Bryant. Lil Nas X featured a Lakers jersey on a chair as he began his performance of Old Town Road in a living room set, referencing Bryan’s famous No. 24 at the Lakers.

DEMI’S RETURN

It was always going to be an emotional moment when pop star Demi Lovato returned to the Grammys stage after she almost died of a drug overdose in 2018.

Her first live performance in almost two years got off to a shaky start, when she stopped the piano intro to the emotive piano ballad Anyone and started the song again. With tears running down her face, the powerhouse vocalist then delivered a soaring, from the guts performance of the plaintive musical plea for help.

The song was written just four days before her overdose. “Anyone, please send me anyone. Lord, is there anyone? I need someone,” she sang, followed by a standing ovation from artists including Lizzo.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Grammy nominee Tyler the Creator stunned with a performance of his song, New Magic Wand, off his Grammy-nominated album, Igor.

He was flanked by mini-Tylers wearing matching peroxide blond wigs during the performance, which included Tyler “throwing himself into a pit of fire and disappearing from the wreckage of the stage”, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In case anyone had forgotten rock’n’roll is still a Grammys worthy genre, rock legends Aerosmith got crazy during their performance.

The MusicCares honorees kicked off as planned with Living on the Edge and then it all got loose as they segued into their monster hit Walk

The Way with rappers Run DMC. Frontman Steve Tyler interrupted his walk through the crowd to declare “Lizzo, I f...ing love you!”.

When he returned to the stage, he grabbed two women out of the mosh to dance on stage beside him, attempting some car crash on-the-spot choreography.

AUSSIE WINNERS

Australian Christian pop duo King and Country have won two Grammys during the pre-televised ceremony.

Brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone with country music legend Dolly Parton won Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for their hit God Only Knows.

The brothers also won Best Contemporary Christian Album for their record Burn The Ship.

The brothers thanked everyone for their donations and prayers for Australia during the bushfire crisis and asked for support to heal.

They also paid tribute to Parton.

“When we stepped in to write this song, we were all walking through really hard moments. As many of you writers know, when that happens you tend to put something on paper so you can reach out to people who are going through the same circumstances,” Joel explained.

“To dear Dolly Parton, who is an incredible human being, it’s one of the great moments of our career to collaborate with her and her team,” he continued.

“I talked to her manager’s sons in Sunday school, they were kind enough to reach out to her and play her the song. But she said something on a call, she said, ‘I love this song because it’s reaching to the marginalised, to the depressed, to the suicidal, which is all of us at some point.”

“And then she said this, in her Dolly accent, ‘I want to take this song from Dollywood to Hollywood to Bollywood,’ and we did it.”

Other early Grammy winners included frontrunner Lizzo, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X.

Beyonce also picked an award for her Homecoming Movie and Michelle Obama for the audiobook of Becoming.
