Having filmed in Camperdown and Newtown — and more recently the Blue Mountains — the Netflix TV series Pieces Of Her made its way to Surry Hills on Saturday as filming of the Toni Collette-led production continues.
Set over multiple time periods, Saturday’s series shoot appeared to recreate the 1980s, with old-style cars lining the streets and extras carrying banners and masks mocking US President Ronald Reagan.
Sequin-draped drag queens were also sighted among extras waving banners that read “Human Need Not Corporate Greed” in what appeared to be a large-scale protest scene.
Crew members were scattered across tiny laneways, concrete steps and pokey buildings with camera equipment in hand. Some were spotted pasting paper posters to the street poles and buffing up modern architecture to give a more “aged” look to the scene.
Set in San Francisco, Pieces Of Her is based on the 2018 novel by Karin Slaughter, and is about a young woman named Andrea who is caught up in a mass shooting at a diner.
It was supposed to be filmed in British Columbia, Canada, last year, but COVID-19 saw the production moved to Australia.
Collette will portray Laura Oliver, who is a mother with a mysterious past.
David Wenham and Colin Friels also appear in the series, expected for release early next year.
While watchers hoping for a peek of the Aussie stars were disappointed, any Game Of Thrones fans were delighted to see Joe Dempsie, better known as the hunky Gendry Baratheon, make an appearance.
His role looked intriguing, as he was one of the ones wearing a Ronald Reagan mask during the march, suggesting something mysterious is afoot — or he’s still hiding from the Red Witch.
