Former Australian Miss Universe Francesca Hung is engaged to her long-term boyfriend Nick Lowry, who popped the question after tricking her into believing she had a Daily Telegraph photo shoot.

The model and actor confirmed the news exclusively to the newspaper at a star-studded Moet and Chandon event on Wednesday night, saying Lowry popped the question on Monday at The Crown in Barangaroo.

The news came as a complete surprise to Hung, who was set-up to believe she had a photo shoot with The Daily Telegraph that day.

“He did a very good job of surprising me. I was actually made to believe I was doing a shoot with The Daily Telegraph at The Crown but it was just a ruse,” she said.

“I had emails from the PR agency and everything, so my fiance had organised it to make me think I was going for a work thing and then I got up to the room and there he was with petals all over the bed.”

Lowry popped the question with Hung’s dream ring – a three-tier diamond Baguette ring with a gold band – images of which were saved in an album on her phone.

“I wasn’t very subtle. I had a folder in my phone labelled rings. And he had obviously found it and got it right,” she said.

The pair have been together for five years so the engagement wasn’t a complete surprise for Hung.

“I’ve never pushed him on the engagement. I kind of always knew I didn’t really need a ring to know we’d be together forever... So when it did it was just like a really beautiful surprise,” she said.

Hung, who is from Sydney’s northern beaches and works as a presenter for E!, said while the pair had talked about having a local wedding to avoid Covid travel cancellations, it was unlikely to happen for a few years.

“I feel like as soon as we got engaged, like I had my nanna on the phone asking when we would be getting married and I was like, “Nanna, I’ve been engaged for an hour.”

“But I have had a few discussions but it’s so stressful that I just go “let’s just talk about it later,” so we wouldn’t be having it until like 2023.“

Hung was joined at the exclusive event by Hollywood A-list celebrity Simon Baker, Ian Thorpe, designer Pip Edwards, model Georgia Fowler and golden couple Jesinta and Lance “Buddy” Franklin.

Edwards, who recently returned from a trip promoting swimwear for her label PE Nation, said she was happy to be home after a whirlwind trip.

“It was amazing to see what the rest of the world is doing. It was amazing to connect but I really did miss home and I think the grass is greener in a way. I’ve had such an amazing time being bunkered down and really, I love home,” she said.

Edwards was without on-again-off-again boyfriend Michael Clarke, who she said was at a sponsored third party event.

Fowler, joined by partner Nathan Dalah, reflected on her life as new mum to three-month-old baby girl Dylan.

“It’s been much easier than I thought. She’s a real angel. It’s really nice being able to hang out with Dylan and have a great baby but also I’ve been picking and choosing jobs here and there which has been nice,” she said.

Donning a neon orange and pink Mariam Seddiq gown, socialite Nadia Fairfax said she was counting the days to her honeymoon in Switzerland with husband Michael Wayne after the pair wedded in June.

“We’re planning our honeymoon in January so don’t know if it’ll be able to happen but fingers crossed,” she said.
