Pregnant model Emily Ratajkowski has announced her plans to raise her unborn child in a gender-neutral environment.

In an essay published by US Vogue on Monday, the American actor, 29, said she and her producer husband Sebastian Bear-McClard “won’t know the gender until our child is 18” as they prefer to force “as few gender stereotypes on my child as possible”.

The couple made the controversial decision in an attempt to be “progressive”.

“I don’t like that we force gender-based preconceptions onto people, let alone babies,” she wrote.

“I want to be a parent who allows my child to show themself to me.”

Ratajkowski, who is 20 weeks along in her pregnancy, said she grew up wanting a baby girl but her views on gender have since evolved.

“It occurs to me that as a younger person I’d almost automatically imagined myself having a daughter,” she wrote.

“When I bring this thought to my therapist, she explains that this is relatively common.”
