David Walliams has opened up about his testy on-air exchange with Kyle Sandilands.

The British comedian, 53, made a guest appearance in studio on the Kyle and Jackie O Show last week, where he engaged in a tense, 25-minute back-and-forth with the radio shock jock, eventually declaring he would “never come back” on their show.

Now, Walliams has answered whether or not the “heat” between the two was real in an interview on KIIS Networks’ Will & Woody, where he offered a surprising response.

“I mean, for me it was more pity,” Walliams declared of Sandilands.

“That’s his style, though, isn’t it? He likes winding people up.

“I was a bit surprised that he didn’t let anyone else speak and he can’t really stay on a subject for very long. It was interesting.”

Walliams, who is perhaps best known for his partnership with fellow UK comedian Matt Lucas on the BBC series Little Britain, ultimately conceded he found Sandilands “interesting”, and understood why people “love to hate” him.

“He was funny. You know, I’d have a drink with him,” Walliams continued.

“He’s an interesting guy. Some of the best celebrities, you kind of love to hate them. And I don’t mean that as an insult, but, you know, people like Jeremy Clarkson or Simon Cowell. And he kind of annoys you, but at the same time, you go back for more and more.”

During the pair’s on-air chat, Walliams repeatedly told Sandilands to “shut up”, and that he had a “face for radio.”

At one point, Walliams called out Sandilands for his lack of showbiz knowledge, after the Sydney co-host admitted he was unaware James Bond had been played by an Australian actor in the past. George Lazenby famously played 007 once in 1969’s Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

“How has he [Sandilands] had this career?” Walliams asked co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

“I was homeless. I was eating out of the bin,” Sandilands responded.

“Well, you will be again soon,” Walliams replied.
