A stand-up comedian from the US has been slammed after joking about Matthew Perry’s death, less than four weeks after it happened.

Matthew Perry joke divides the internet

A stand-up comedian has divided the internet after joking about the death of Friends star, Matthew Perry.

Hans Kim made the joke on stage recently while performing in Texas, and posted a clip of the gag on TikTok.

In the video, Kim says: “Sad to hear that the great Matthew Perry died alone in a hot tub. For a guy on a show called Friends, he could have used a couple.”

He added, “Who knew the opening credits (of Friends) were his cry for help?” referring to the iconic fountain scene from the long-running sitcom, which showed Perry splashing around and spitting water from his mouth.

The TikTok video has been viewed for than 250,000 times and has received hundreds of comments, with many writing that it was “too soon” to joke about Perry’s October 28 death.

“Nah man, way too soon … there is a limit,” one person wrote on TikTok.

Other comments included: “Need a dislike button for TikTok vids” and, “No issues with it being too soon, it’s just not a good joke”.

On the flip side there were also plenty of positive comments, with several writing that Perry was known to have a good sense of humour and would probably have laughed at his joke.

“He would’ve loved the joke … y’all soft,” one person commented.

“Dude, awesome line, love it,” wrote another fan.
