THERE was only one fashion faux pas on the red carpet at Sydney’s Paddington Bear premiere yesterday and it wasn’t a celebrity revealing a little too much. It was a baby wearing nothing but a nappy.
Yumi Stynes took her six-month-old daughter Mercy to the event just like the other celebrity parents escorting their children up the red carpet at Event Cinemas in George Street.
The difference between Stynes’ daughter and the children belonging to Tamin Sursok, Jessica Rowe and Jackie O was that everyone else was fully clothed.

Mercy, possibly in her big red carpet debut, graced the presence of all and sundry in nought but a disposable nappy as she gazed bright-eyed from mum’s arms.
And before everyone starts decrying the despicable male who knows nothing of being a parent I offer my credentials as the father of a four-year-old daughter (currently fully clothed to the best of my knowledge), a one-year-old son and one more on the way.
At that age, if my children were in public, they at least wore a singlet and a nappy cover.
And if it was known we were to be on a red carpet for some reason they would sure as hell be wearing more than that.
Even if Stynes wanted Mercy to go casual on the red carpet she could have at least managed a jumpsuit.
In the end what we have is something that just looks plain weird.
You don’t even see babies wearing nappies only at the local shopping centre let alone in front of flashing cameras at a movie premiere.
And yes, Sydney is in the midst of a heatwave so perhaps the less clothing the better for Mercy’s comfort. But the premiere was staged at 9.30am, not 3pm in sweltering 35C heat.
The only real excuse Stynes could have would be the eventuation of a catastrophic No. 3 in the car en route to the event.
For non-parents, a No. 3 - in layman’s terms - is a poo explosion. A bowel movement that requires not only a nappy change but a full wardrobe change.
That is the only thing that can get Stynes off the hook for her underdressed offspring although any parent worth their salt would ask why she was without a stash of spare clothes.
