Union flag will no longer be flown from government buildings for any of the Queen’s children after Prince Andrew scandal

The Queen has reportedly signed off on a major change that will impact all her children in a bid “not to upset Andrew”.

Government buildings in the UK will no longer fly the Union Flag for any of the Queen’s children amid the Prince Andrew sex scandal.

In February, plans to raise the flag to mark the disgraced Duke of York’s 60th birthday were quietly scrapped after a string of councils refused to obey the flag-flying rules.

Now, the UK government has withdrawn the honour for all of the Queen’s children’s birthdays — a change thought to have been signed off by Her Majesty herself, according to The Sun.

Insiders said the move was “so as not to upset Andrew, who is decidedly prickly on these sorts of matters”.

“It is widely considered to have happened to avoid embarrassment for Andrew,” another source told The Sun.

The latest decision will also remove Princess Anne, Prince Edward and even Prince William and Kate from the government’s flag-flying guidance to local government.

The latest decision to scrap the flag rule will affect other royals including Prince William and Kate.

It is the latest blow after the Queen stripped the Prince Andrew of all military titles and royal patronages last month amid sex abuse claims and the prospect of a civil trial in the US.

Virginia Giuffre, 38, claims she was forced to have sex with Andrew three times between 1999 and 2002 – in London, New York and on the Caribbean island owned by his late paedophile pal, Jeffrey Epstein.

The Duke denies all allegations made against him.

“Since 2021, the default position is that the flag flies all year unless another flag is being flown,” the government said.
