Sheer fashion is in and underwear is optional – or being worn as tops – as we head into party season, if the runways of Paris fashion week are anything to go by.
From sexy, see-through styles at Stella McCartney and billowy blouses at Chanel, to blazers worn with nothing underneath at Victoria Beckham, the French runways have given an early look into how we will dress in coming seasons.
As so-called “fashion month” draws to a close with its finale in Paris this week, US supermodels Bella and Gigi Hadid have been leading the trends, with Australian fashion experts saying shoppers will take real-life inspo from the looks on the eveof party season.
At Miu Miu, bras were outerwear and low-slung waistlines were everywhere as the “it” girl brand continued taking inspirationfrom Y2K fashion. Coperni nailed the translucent party frock – as seen on Bella Hadid – which was overshadowed by its spray-painted “naked” dress, which went viral.
At Stella McCartney, sustainable fabrics were semi-sheer and tailored trousers were worn low on the hips, with cut-outs on the sides.
“The trend of sheer clothing has been huge all year and will defiantly be at the forefront of dressing this spring summer in Australia,” leading celebrity stylist Jess Pecoraro said.
“When it comes to styling with sheer clothing it is all about layering, mixing textures and really having fun with it,” MsPecoraro said.
“Brands like Fendi and Christopher Esber to large chain-stores like Zara and H&M will be embracing this trend and making sure that there is something for everyone wanting to (wear it).”
Vogue Australia fashion features director Alice Birrell said trends seen on the runways in Paris would serve as inspo for warmer weather Down Under.
“We may be geographically remote from the major four fashion capitals but despite this, or more accurately, because of this, Australians are early adopters of some of the boldest trends,” Ms Birrell said.
“Remember, we enter our summer season first, so are the first to be able to try the trends fresh off the runway.
“For these reasons, the sheer trend we saw everywhere at the spring/summer ‘23 shows will be high on the hit list, something we’ve already seen hints of at early-season music festivals.”
Though pulling off the trend “does require bravery”, she said.
“Look to the barely-there bodysuit as worn by Bella Hadid at Stella McCartney, or the gossamer-thin sheers at Chanel – it’s all about embracing body positivity,” Ms Birrell said.
“For those wishing to dabble, a more grown up take can be seen in macramé, thrown over swimwear and taken straight to the bar.”
