Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been photographed handing out nappies and backpacks after they volunteered for a back-to-school charity event in the US in what marks their first charity engagement since lockdown.
Both wearing face masks and sporting adorable matching looks, the couple distributed supplies and clothes at a drive-through run by Los Angeles charity Baby2Baby, which provides basic necessities for families in need.
Pictures showed the couple handing supplies in through the windows of cars at Dr Owen Lloyd Knox Elementary School in South Los Angeles on Wednesday.
The pair have clearly adapted to California’s relaxed style with Meghan sporting loose khaki shorts with a white shirt and sneakers, and Prince Harry mirroring his wife in white polo shirt and khaki shorts. In one slight difference, the prince topped his look off with a baseball cap to protect that fair skin against California’s heatwave.
A source close to the couple reportedly told Entertainment Tonight that “there was nothing but smiles” as they chatted with families and wished the kids good luck on their school year.
“Everyone was in great spirits,” a source close to the Sussexes reportedly told Finding Freedom author and royal reporter, Omid Scobie.
“The kids were eager to receive their books and supplies and Meghan and Harry did what they do best – engage and connect with the crowd.”
The organisation posted its thanks to their famous volunteers via Instagram.
“Baby2Baby was proud to host a drive-through distribution at Knox Elementary in South LA as students across the country return to distance learning this week. Thank you to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex for joining our team to help us distribute school supplies, clothing, hygiene items, food and more to children who need these basic essentials more than ever during this unprecedented back to school season.”
The volunteering comes after it emerged the couple had bought a property in the celebrity hotspot of Santa Barbara for a reported $A20 million.
Entertainment Tonight reported that Prince Harry and Meghan “love” living in California and are “excited” to become part of the Santa Barbara community. A source told the entertainment news show that it is a “happy time” for the family and Archie is doing well.
Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as senior royals in January, announcing they would be financially independent from “the firm”.
The couple recently honoured the Queen in a virtual appearance with the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.
