Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, laughs off ‘fat’ remark during a visit to a dog charity

Meghan Markle has shown off the versatility of her wardrobe, stepping out in a budget dress for a visit to a dog charity, before changing into something far more glamorous for a theatre visit with Prince Harry.

Is Meghan Markle a miserable royal?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have attended the glamorous premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s new show Totem, which was being held to benefit Prince Harry’s charity Sentebale.

The charity supports young people living with HIV in the African country of Lesotho.

Prince Harry and his wife arrived at the Royal Albert Hall to meet performers and organisers of the event, with Meghan dressed in a sparkling, floor-length dark coloured gown by French designer Roland Mouret - priced at a whopping £3400 ($A6105).

Earlier, Meghan laughed after a pensioner remarked “you’re such a fat lady” as she showed off her baby bump while visiting a dog charity.

The Duchess of Sussex was also seen cradling her bump as she arrived for her first visit to the Mayhew since being named its patron.

Despite a rainy and windy day the 37-year-old Duchess chose to wear a $60 figure-hugging cream dress from high street brand H&M, which clung to her baby bump and stopped at the knee.

She topped it with a cream Armani coat, and towering stiletto shoes, a dazzling vision who somehow managed to get through the visit without picking up a single dirty paw print.

The 37-year-old burst out laughing as care home resident Peggy McEachrom jokingly commented: “You’re such a fat lady.”

Pregnant Meghan replied: “I’ll take it.”

The former actress appeared delighted as she chatted with residents who have been helped by dogs — including pup Roobarb.

Dog-lover Meghan, who had two rescue dogs in her adopted city of Toronto in Canada before she moved to London, cooed over a Jack Russell terrier up for adoption but told volunteers at the shelter: “We can’t take another dog before the baby as our hands are too full.’’

The 37-year-old will work with the organisation to raise awareness for the work they do to improve the lives of animals and people in London.

The former American actress has hit the ground running this year after being given her first patronages — including two from the Queen.

The roles, which will see her work with Smart Works, the National Theatre and The Association of Commonwealth Universities, were a vote of confidence from the Monarch after she joined the Royal Family last year.

She and Prince Harry, 34, are expecting their first baby in late April or early May.
