MOVIE star Margot Robbie is the latest celebrity caught up in a furore over stars advertising products by stealth on social media.

MOVIE star Margot Robbie is the latest celebrity caught up in a furore over stars advertising products by stealth on social media, as Instagram prepares to crack down on ambiguous posts.

At Glastonbury music festival in the UK over the weekend, Robbie posted a picture to her 12 million Instagram followers and tagged @hunterboots and wrote #ad.

The actor, who is reportedly worth $8 million, does not appear to even be wearing gumboots.

Soon after, “#ad” was scrubbed from the caption.

Australian advertising guidelines are weak, with social media influencers expected to make it clear when content is paid for, but there are no guidelines on what the post needs to say.

In the UK social media users also have to label content as being paid for but, again, how is not stipulated.

An Instagram spokeswoman said celebrities must be more transparent when they are pocketing cash or benefiting from a post, adding it will introduce a “paid partnership with” subheading to encourage users to be more upfront.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority said it was not investigating Robbie.

The actor’s representatives did not respond to questions from The Daily Telegraph.
