Actor Johnny Depp racked up a restaurant bill totalling almost $A90,000, in a private meal he shared with friends following his defamation case victory over former wife Amber Heard.

The 58-year-old was joined by musician mate Jeff Beck and about 20 others as the group took over popular restaurant Varanasi on Sunday night.

The Birmingham-based eatery is considered to be one of the UK’s leading Indian restaurants.

The group dined on an Indian banquet that was specially prepared for them, as well as cocktails and rose champagne, the Daily Mail reports.

After arriving about 7pm, Depp posed for pictures with staff and their friends and family, who had apparently been sworn to secrecy.

Varanasi operations director Mohammed Hussain said the restaurant received a call that afternoon advising of Depp and the group’s plans.

“I was shocked and at first, I thought it might have been a wind up,” he said.

“But the his security team arrive, checked out the restaurant and we let them have the whole place because we were concerned that he might be bothered by other diners.”

Mr Hussain described Depp as a “very lovely, down to earth bloke”

“[Depp] spent a lot of time speaking with the staff, our friends and family, and was happy to pose for pictures with them,” he said.

“Young would never have thought that he was such a big star. He had a lot of time for us all.”

The special banquet included starters of shish kebabs, chicken tikka and tandoori king prawns, Mr Hussain said.

Butter chicken, paneer tikka masala, lamb karahi and king prawn bhuna were features of the main meal with sides of nans, rice and salad.

Depp also dined on panna cotta and cheesecake for dessert before settling the bill, which is understood to have totalled a whopping £50,000 (A$87,140).

The actor has accompanied Beck on his UK tour since the end of the trial and has previously been seen at the Sage Gateshead gig, as well as Glasgow and Royal Albert Hall.

The actor also joined Beck on stage at his Symphony Hall concert in Birmingham.

Depp has been letting his hair down since defeating ex-wife Heard in a defamation against over a story she wrote in 2018 that alleged she was a domestic abuse victim.

The Hollywood actor is set to receive millions from Heard after the judge presiding over the case ordered the Aquaman actress to pay US$15 million (A$20 million) – $A13.8 million in compensation and $A6.9 million in punitive damages, minus the $A2.7 million he was ordered to pay her.
