Jemima Kirke’s perfect response to hairy armpit criticism

GIRLS actress Jemima Kirke copped a heap of criticism for proudly flashing her underarm hair on the red carpet. Her response was pretty perfect.

JEMIMA Kirke turned heads when she hit the red carpet at the CFDA Fashion Awards, but it wasn’t because she looked a million bucks in a stunning red two-piece ensemble.

Onlookers did a double-take when they noticed the Girls star had her armpit hair on display at the annual style event held in New York City.

Kirke stepped out, along with dozens of A-listers, in a floor length Rosie Assoulin gown, proudly revealing her underarm hair for all to see. At one point, she even lifted her arm for a video, which was quickly shared via Snapchat.

It wasn’t long before the 30-year-old actress was slammed on social media for embracing the look. One US gossip website wrote: “Our immediate reaction was … cringe!” adding, “With a statement white hibiscus flower in her tousled tresses, the look head-to-toe seemed a sophisticated choice … until that unfortunate armpit Twitter pic surfaced.”

Another commented: “Ewwwww! No! No! No! We ... are staunchly opposed to armpit hair (on women), nose hair, ear hair and toe hair.”

Unfazed by the criticism, Kirke’s only response was to retweet one follower’s reaction. And it was pretty perfect.

Kirke, who plays Jessa on Lena Dunham’s hit HBO series, told the NY Daily News of her new look: “I love it ... I only recently started doing it because my sister did it first and I was like, ‘That looks good! I want to do that.’

“Now I’ve had it for a year or so and I love it ... I feel very French.”

The mother-of-two opened up recently about embracing her body and celebrating being strong, rather than skinny.

“As women, we’re taught our whole lives that thin is better, that the less space we take up the better, and that being strong is not associated with being feminine,” Kirke told online wellness site Well and Good.

“I’ve been in that place where you’re torturing yourself at the gym to be thin, I’ve done that for years.

“I’ll tell you now, you’re not going to have the body you have in mind by doing that, because it’s often something totally unrealistic you saw in a magazine.”
