InStyle Women of Style awards lives up to glitzy reputation

EVERYONE was a winner at last night’s InStyle awards, with attendees going home with a $1500 gift bag.

WOMEN from in front and behind the cameras were celebrated at Redfern’s CarriageWorks last night.

Puberty Blues and Offspring producer Imogen Banks and Hollywood actor Naomi Watts split the entertainment ­category while indigenous ­filmmaker and actor Leah Purcell took home the arts and culture award at the annual InStyle and Audi Women of Style Awards.

“The really lovely thing about these awards is that, yes, we have categories like entertainment where of course the names are more ­instantly recognisable but we also have the opportunity to recognise women in other fields that aren’t celebrated as much such as science, community and business,” InStyle editor Emily Taylor said.

Shark Tank judge and Boost Juice founder Janine Allis won the business gong while Lorraine ­Foster, owner of The Vintage Clothing Shop, secured the fashion award. Taylor said women across the 10 categories were aged ­between 24 and 70.

“That speaks to the fact style is ageless and that women are inspiration whether they are very young or more senior in their ­careers,” she said.

“There are women of so many different generations making an impact in this country.”

Mecca Cosmetica’s Jo Horgan won the beauty category, Sibella Court took out the lifestyle award and Yassmin Abdel-Magied was recognised for her charity work.

For the science and environment category, the nod went to ­Melanoma Institute Australia’s Dr Georgina Long with Marita Cheng securing the style scholarship and plus-size model Robyn Lawley named the readers’ choice.

A Place To Call Home’s Marta Dusseldorp hosted the night with those presenting awards including Asher Keddie, Jessica Mauboy, Collette Dinnigan, Gillian ­Armstrong and Claudia Karvan.

Meanwhile, organisers upped the ante with this year’s goodie bag. Arguably the best haul of the party circuit each year, the ­contents were worth more than $1500 and included a Paklite carry-on suitcase, a Nespresso gift pack, La Prarie skin care, ­perfume, an Oroton umbrella, Georg Jensen gift voucher and an Ecoya candle.

Hot couples Lindy and Michael Klim and Anthony Minichiello and Terry Biviano, actress Asher Keddie, model Jesinta Campbell, singer Jessica Mauboy and Kyly Clarke were among the A-listers who were front row and centre at the glitzy sit-down dinner.

Also among the 300 guests who stormed the red carpet were Seven personalities Tom Williams and Kylie Gillies, model Samantha Harris, singer Megan Washington and designers Alexandra and Genevieve Smart.

There were 10 gongs up for grabs on the night in categories including entertainment, arts and culture, fashion and business.
