Aaron Carter said in an interview just months before his death that he had finally got “rehab right”.
The 34-year-old singer was found dead in California last week.
Police were reportedly sent to the home of the former child pop star about 11am on Saturday local time.
His body was found in a bath where he had been for some time, according to reports.
An official cause of death has still not been released.
Carter was active across social media only hours before his death, posting on TikTok and Instagram in his final days.
His final social media post was a music video shared to Instagram that showed the singer-turned-rapper singing the lyrics: “I’ll tell my honey I’ll be gone but it’s not for long”.
He was engaged to Melanie Martin. The pair welcomed a son on November 22, 2021.
Now an interview has emerged from August where Carter talks about his future, being a better version of himself and that he once dated a transgender person.
Carter appeared on the pilot episode of K'LA Afterdark, a talk show compered by fashion designer Kaila Methven.
“I took a break since 2017. I need to go to rehab,” Carter told Methven on the truncated clip of the interview.
Methven asked Carter if rehab was “hard” or if he “grew into a new Aaron Carter”.
“I think I grew into the real true authentic version of myself,” he replied.
“I went to rehab four times until I finally got it right.”
However, in September, the Fool’s Gold singer revealed that he had “voluntarily” checked into an outpatient program of a rehab centre in order to try and regain custody of his 11-month-old son, Prince.
He was later pulled over by police on suspicion of a DUI, according to celebrity gossip website TMZ.
Aaron said at the time that he was seeking help to manage “triggers” that made him want to smoke marijuana, and also admitted to taking Xanax as part of a “regimented medication” plan to keep him “clean from huffing dust”.
Huffing refers to inhaling substances, often found in common household implements and products, to get a high.
He had previously admitted to be to being addicted to opioids after being prescribed oxycodone following a fight in which he broke his jaw.
Methven also discussed Carter’s personal life and relationships in the clip.
He had previously stated he was bisexual although he had walked those remarks back saying while he found men “attractive”, he saw himself only in a relationship with a woman.
“I think men are beautiful, I think women are beautiful,” he told Methven.
“I think anybody who is transgender is gorgeous. I’ve even dated a transgender woman before.”
Methven said Carter was “a joy to work with,” during the K’LA Afterdark interview.
“He arrived on set with his fiancee Melanie Martin, and to be honest, he seemed perfectly sober,” she told the Daily Mail.
“Aaron was really super sweet with all the staff, he took pictures with everyone.
“I know that he had suffered many problems in the past, but it was a completely different person that I interviewed, that’s why it’s so important for me to show the world, a different aspect of Aaron Carter, and that’s what my show is really about, is showing people what celebrities are really like, not what they are portrayed to be.”
