Rapper Megan Thee Stallion has broken a major rule at today’s Met Gala – and boasted about her exploits on social media.
Millions watched as celebs walked the red carpet outside New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, posing for hundreds of photographers from around the world.
But what happens inside the annual Gala is much more private – which is exactly how Vogue editor Anna Wintour and her team of Met organisers like it.
Guests must adhere to a very strict no phones rule once inside the venue. Vogue describes the rule like this: “In short: It’s a secret. For this reason, guests must abide by the no phone (and therefore, no social media) policy.”
There are usually a few sneak rule-breakers, but perhaps none so brazen as Megan Thee Stallion, who used her phone to record videos with a number of celebs once she was inside today.
“We not supposed to have our phone,” Megan said in one clip, walking inside the venue with fellow rapper Doja Cat and actress Tracee Ellis Ross.
“Not at all – put your phone away,” Ross told her.
She also posed with Cynthia Erivo, telling her: “I snuck my phone inside. Peace!”
And in another video posted to her Instagram account, Megan toasted an oeuvre d’oeuvres with fellow rapper Doechii at a table inside the venue.
“Typical Aquarius breaking all the rules,” one person commented under the video, while another quipped that they were “here before Anna [Wintour] makes you delete this.”
Others worried the star would never be invited back to the Gala – but thanked her for the “forbidden footage.”
The theme for this year’s Met Gala was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’.
The theme was reportedly based off the vision of author Monica L. Miller, who wrote the 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. According to Vogue, the exhibit will highlight “the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day.”
It made for one of the more confusing Met Gala red carpets in recent memory, with a very broad interpretation of the theme: Lots of structured (and deconstructed) tailoring, but also several pants-free celebs (Sabrina Carpenter and K-pop star Lisa among those who just wore pantyhose on their bottom half), and some attention-grabbing stunts like former OutKast star Andre 3000 arriving with a piano strapped to his back, Rihanna using the red carpet to debut her baby bump and confirm her third pregnancy, and rapper Doechii leaving her hotel hidden in a giant box to keep her outfit a surprise for the red carpet.
