Aussie actress Margot Robbie and her Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling have walked their first red carpet together.
And it seems a bit of Barbie and Ken has rubbed off on the two actors, who both looked pretty in pink as they appeared at CinemaCon alongside Barbie director Greta Gerwig to talk up the film ahead of its July release.
Variety reports that Robbie, 32, wore a gingham Prada set, along with Louboutin shoes and a Chanel anklet. Gosling, 42, kept it casual in a hot pink jacket and a custom T-shirt bearing director Gerwig’s name in the iconic Barbie font.
A big-screen Barbie film has been in the works in Hollywood for years now – it was first publicly announced back in 2009 – but suffered several false starts, as actresses Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway both signed on to play the titular role.
Robbie signed on in 2019, but little was known about exactly what the film would look like until the first trailer dropped earlier this month.
It shows a film with its tongue planted very firmly in cheek, with adult jokes about Ken and Barbie’s sex life (or lack thereof) and an all-star supporting cast including everyone from Helen Mirren to Dua Lipa.
And one split-second shot in the trailer – showing Barbie stepping out of her signature heels, but keeping her toes on point – sent fans into a frenzy, dubbing the detail “genius”.
But Gosling’s casting as Ken has been more controversial, with debate raging about whether the 42-year-old is too old for the role, and fans dissecting every new glimpse of his bleached-blonde version of Ken as shots from the movie were released online.
Barbie will be released in Australian cinemas on July 20.
