TV icon unrecognisable after ditching trademark look

He’s one of Hollywood’s biggest icons – but without his signature look, the star flew almost completely under the radar in LA recently.

He has one of the most iconic looks in Hollywood – but without his trademark moustache, Tom Selleck was barely recognisable as he stepped out in a rare public outing recently.

The Magnum P.I. star almost flew totally under the radar as he ran errands and picked up a meal at McDonald’s in the San Fernando Valley in California, sporting a full beard in place of his decades-long neatly-trimmed moustache.

Selleck, 78, was dressed down in a dark blue T-shirt as he walked down the street and later jumped into his car near his home in Sherman Oaks.

The actor – who became a household name in the 1980s – has kept a very low-profile in recent years, and was last spotted in public more than a year ago, driving a silver pick-up truck in his neighbourhood.

As well as Magnum P.I., Selleck is known for appearing in numerous TV shows and films over the years, including Three Men and a Baby, Hook, Friends and Las Vegas.

These days, he stars as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, although the show has been on hiatus due to the writers’ strike.

The Writers Guild of America finally struck a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in late September following the months-long industrial action.

Meanwhile, Selleck is reportedly keeping busy working on a memoir, which will cover his lengthy career and private life “away from the cameras”.

He’s been married to actress Jillie Mack for 36 years, and the pair share a 34-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Selleck is also dad to a 57-year-old son, Kevin, from his previous marriage to Jacqueline Ray.

He offered a rare insight into his personal life after being honoured with a Paley Award in 2020, releasing a statement about his journey to stardom.

“From a kid who ‘watched’ the radio to a young man who languished on the bench of the USC basketball team, well, it’s a long way from there to here,” Selleck said at the time.

“To be honest I am not sure where ‘getting here’ lands you, so I am grateful for the Paley Center’s invitation to a celebration of ‘getting here,’ wherever that may be.”
