Surprise revelation over Travis Kelce’s Super Bowl ‘disaster’

The Kansas City Chiefs have given an insight into why Travis Kelce had a game he’d rather forget at the Super Bowl as Hollywood circles the star who is contemplating his future.

Travis Kelce was fighting a “big illness” before his “suboptimal” Super Bowl defeat.

US sports pundits called Kelce’s performance a “disaster” but Brett Veach, the General Manager of Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, spoke about the issues facing the 35-year-old in the run-up to the game during an episode of the NFL podcast, The Insiders.

Stating that he wasn’t “making excuses” for the Chiefs’ loss, Veach said that Kelce was “battling a pretty big illness” before the Super Bowl, where the Chiefs were thrashed by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Veach said Kelce’s illness didn’t make much difference to the score as the Eagles — who won 40-22 — played so well. “We didn’t have the end to our season that we hoped for,” he added.

Touching on the loss, Veach admitted that the Chiefs had “picked a bad day to have a bad day.” But he said that the team would use the experience as “motivation to get better”.

“You learn more from your losses than your wins,” Veach added.

Kelce was a non-factor in the game.

It comes as the star – who is in a relationship with Taylor Swift – has faced lingering questions about his future and whether he will suit up for the Chiefs for another season.

Indeed, Hollywood is calling the star with industry pundits saying he “100 per cent has a future” in the entertainment industry.

In the US, he has already hosted the game show Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity? and appeared in the Ryan Murphy series, Grotesquerie. He also hosted Saturday Night Live in 2023. Currently, he’s serving as an executive producer on the film, My Dead Friend Zoe about an army vet reconnecting with her grandfather.

Kelce has spoken about his interest in getting into show business.

“I’ve been fortunate to do a few things outside of the sports world that I’ve been enjoying doing, like getting on camera,” Kelce said last month.

“The [Saturday Night Live] stuff kind of opened up a new happiness and a new career path for me, but it’s funny for me to even say that at this point in my career because I think it’s so much further down the road than it is right now,” he said.

“He’s really enjoyed hosting, and after he retires, he wants to lean into acting and hosting,” a source told People magazine last month. “He had a blast at SNL.”

But the Chiefs aren’t going to give up on their star player just yet. In fact, when Veach was asked about Kelce, he said the star was likely to go around again.

“He has one more year under contract,” Veach said. “Still think he has that fire and desire to play. As far as I’m concerned, there is no deadline [for a decision] I think we left it as he’d be back. And we’re excited to get him back and get him going.”
