Prince George and Princess Charlotte enjoyed the drama courtside at Wimbledon as Novak Djokovic battled Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling match that led the Spaniard to a surprise victory.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were in attendance for the blockbuster final along with their two oldest children as Djokovic and Alcaraz fought for the prestigious crown.
Alcaraz put aside a nervous start to end Djokovic’s 34-match winning streak, beating him 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Sunday’s Wimbledon final was billed as the “ultimate showdown” by Alcaraz’s opponent, seven-time champion, Novak Djokovic, and the Spaniard responded with a suitably inspired performance and was crowned the new king of Wimbledon, dethroning Djokovic on Centre Court.
The Spaniard looked to be on his way to victory when he recovered from a nervous start to take a two-sets-to-one lead only for Djokovic to show once again his remarkable powers of resilience.
But 20-year-old Alcaraz came back to claim victory after four hours and 42 minutes, finally landing a meaningful blow for the young guns against the man 16 years his senior.
Alcaraz slumped to the court after Djokovic’s final forehand dropped into the net before sharing a long embrace with the vanquished Serbian.
According to The Sun, the royals watched on with bated breath as the experienced Djokovic, 36, vied to win a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title.
However, it was his opponent who became the youngest man to reach the final since fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in 2006.
The Princess of Wales presented the winning trophy to Alcaraz, and the runner’s up trophy to Djokovic.
Charlotte, 8, and George, 9, appeared transfixed by the spectacle, gasping as Djokovic and Alcaraz traded blows in a fiercely competitive match.
At one point, the young pair could not even bear to watch the high-stakes game after one especially nerve wracking rally.
Charlotte wore a blue summer dress and George was decked out smartly in a navy suit, shirt and tie.
The young Princess cut an adorable figure as she beamed excitedly while waving to fans while George also enjoying the battle.
William looked dapper in a grey blazer and navy trousers while Kate dazzled in a classy green dress as the pair waved to excited tennis fans below.
With the sun shining brightly, Charlotte even put on a pair of sunglasses as the two tennis aces went head-to-head.
But it was not to be a day out at Centre Court for adorable Prince Louis who was left at home by his parents.
The young royal has stolen the show during recent public events with his naughty antics and cheeky body language.
Speaking to Ella Ottaway, Children, Young People and Families Coordinator at Wimbledon, Princess Catherine said: “It’s Charlotte’s first time, George came last year. They’ve been eagerly watching. Charlotte you’ve been getting to grips with the scoring haven’t you.
“Louis was very upset he wasn’t coming today.”
Before the match, the Prince and Princess of Wales shook hands with staff and shared a hearty lawn-side chat with ball boys and girls.
While Charlotte and George were seen beaming as they were given bags on their arrival to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
A host of global stars such as Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, Idris Elba, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Hiddleston were also spotted in the crowd.
Alcaraz has become just the fifth man in the Open Era to win multiple major titles prior to turning 21.
The 20-year-old, whose brand of huge groundstrokes and delicate touches has lit up the All England Club this fortnight, is just the fourth active male player to lift the trophy at the All England Club, after Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray
KATE’S SWEET TRIBUTE TO LOUIS AT WIMBLEDON
The Princess of Wales has made a subtle tribute to youngest son Prince Louis as she dazzled tennis fans at the women’s final at Wimbledon.
Catherine couldn’t contain her excitement as she watched Marketa Vondrousova beat Ons Jabeur to claim the grand slam title.
Opting for an $800 pastel green dress by Self Portrait, Catherine kept her accessories to a minimum but they had sentimental value, The Sun reports.
The flower-shaped pearl earrings she was wearing at the Wimbledon final were the same ones she wore at the christening of Prince Louis back in 2018.
The princess is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and is a regular face at Wimbledon.
She signified her patron status by wearing a dark green and purple bow pinned to her dress.
The royal chatted to tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova as play got underway.
Watching the dramatic match from the Royal Box, Princess Catherine cheered, applauded and beamed as Vondrousova became the first-ever unseeded Grand Slam champion.
The animated royal even watched through her fingers at one point as the final reached its latter stages.
The Princess later comforted Jabeur before congratulating Vondrousova on her epic win.
It comes after she was last week seen sharing a joke with tennis legend Roger Federer in Wimbledon’s Royal Box as she cheered on Andy Murray.
Ahead of the tournament, the pair played a doubles match on the No3 Court to highlight the work of ball boys and girls.
