Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest award nomination for their explosive docuseries on Netflix has been branded a “PR stunt”.
The pair’s controversial Harry & Meghan six-parter received a nomination for Best Streaming Nonfiction Series from the Hollywood Critics Association TV Award.
The $150 million series, released last December, was the first project to emerge from the multi-year deal the Sussexes signed with the streaming giant in 2020.
The docuseries caused a global uproar with its explosive allegations and barbs aimed at the royal family.
But royal expert Kinsey Schofield has insisted the new award nomination is not well-meaning, The Express reports.
She told TalkTV: “This to me is the biggest PR stunt from the HCA trying to legitimise themselves because what they want is for Harry and Meghan to show up.
“It’s not even televised, nobody knows that this thing exists.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Harry and Meghan won this because it would give these people the most publicity they would ever have in their life if Harry and Meghan showed up and they actually might.”
Meanwhile, the Sussexes are said to be “devastated” about missing out on an Emmy Awards nomination for the Liz Garbus-directed Netflix series.
Ingrid Seward, the editor of Majesty magazine, said the couple would be determined to hide their irritation and would instead emphasise their Hollywood Critics Awards’ nomination.
“Meghan and Harry will concentrate on this and make it a positive, however irritated they might be not to be in the Emmy nominations,” Ms Seward said.
“They are having a run of bad luck in their working life. But ironically as long as they concentrate on delivering personal stuff instead of more serious work, people will be interested.
“They have built a gilded cage of expectation around themselves from which it will be hard to escape.”
