A royal expert has claimed Meghan Markle blew a promising start with the Royal Family, and revealed why the Duchess put on a “Hollywood performance” during the Sussexes’ Australian tour.

Meghan Markle always played the victim and was looking for a way out of the Royal Family from the start, a royal expert has claimed.

Veteran royal correspondent Valentine Low believes Markle wasted her “great potential” after a promising start as Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, Low said Markle had done “amazing” work – but picked fights behind the scenes.

“I think she got stuck in. What was amazing was on the day that the engagement was announced, she gave a television interview,” Low said.

“She talked about wanting to take on Commonwealth roles.

“She’d been well-briefed and was perfectly happy to spout her brief on air about what the future might be for her.”

Low also said that, at the start, Markle did some “very interesting things”.

“She brought a lot of energy and a fresh approach to the whole royal thing,” he said.

“But I also know that for all the great potential she showed, if you talk to people on the inside they believe rightly or wrongly that she was constantly casting herself as a victim.

“Saying, ‘You don’t want me, you think I’m going to fail, I’m not welcome really’.

“It’s as if, they believe, she was looking for a way out from the very beginning.”

Low added that he thought the Duchess of Sussex put on a “brilliant Hollywood performance” while on overseas tours – including Australia – with Prince Harry.

“There are two things I remember, one from the Australian tour to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga,” he said.

“When we went to Fiji, I believe it was, there was a welcome ceremony, which was quite long.

“It involved them sitting on two thrones in front of an invited audience. Harry was hacked off with the press. He was annoyed with us for some reason,” Low recalled.

“There are many reasons why Harry might be annoyed with us. He spent the entire hour and a bit of this occasion just looking slightly over to one side where we were sitting.

“He was just staring daggers at us. He was furious. Harry has no filter, he couldn’t hide his fury.

“Meghan was sitting bolt upright in her throne on stage and kept a perfect Hollywood smile on throughout, perfect posture throughout.

“It was an absolutely brilliant performance. I thought she is a real professional.

“The other thing was the South Africa tour. They did an interesting thing.

“Every day they would give a little sound bite to the TV cameras so the media always had something interesting to report about what they had to say, what they were doing that day.

“We the newspapers – kind of the poor cousins in this arrangement – we weren’t getting anything.

“We could feed off the crumbs from the TV appearance but we weren’t getting our own little chat with Harry or Meghan.

“Towards the end of the tour it was agreed that Meghan would talk to the newspaper reporters.

“They insisted it had to be me because they weren’t going to have any of the nasty tabloid people who Meghan as well as Harry absolutely hated.

“I was mooted to have this little two-minute chat with her. It was kind of fascinating.

“Only five, six hours later they released the bombshell statement where they said Meghan was suing the Mail on Sunday newspaper for what it published about her.

“Harry released a statement attacking the press, particularly the tabloid press.

“It made front pages everywhere. But you wouldn’t have known that talking to Meghan.

“She smiled nicely, answered my questions. I knew Harry was in a bad mood that day so I kept it nice.

“But while talking to her I just got the impression that she was focusing on a point about twelve inches behind the back of my head.

“She was looking straight through me. Once it was over, she said bye and walked off.

“I bumped into her – she wouldn’t have known who I was. I was just a nothing to her.

“It was a very weird experience. She was totally professional but no personal engagement whatsoever.”
