Meghan Markle and Prince Harry look ‘uncomfortable’ standing for ‘God Save the King’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appeared “uncomfortable” when they were forced to honour King Charles at an event.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were forced to stand during the updated British national anthem ‘God Save the King’ during their visit to Nigeria.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wrapped their unofficial three-day tour of the African country on Sunday, in which they attended a number of events, including the Wuse Lightway Academy in Abuja, where Harry spoke about mental health, and a women in leadership summit, where Meghan discussed the importance of representation.

Another appearance included a charity dinner on Friday night, with “uncomfortable” video emerging on X of the pair standing during the anthem, which was changed from ‘God Save the Queen’ after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Military personnel could be seen performing salutes as the official anthem rang out, while the Sussexes respectfully stood side-by-side.

Many have taken to social media to say the former royals appear to look “awkward”.

“They must be squirming here, seeing as they hate every thing the royal family stand for especially knowing none of them including his father want anything to do with them,” one user wrote.

“I bet that burned deep,” another said.

“H and M Having to stand while the room is honouring his father …” a third added.

“Must have been making him rage inside having to stand,” another wrote.

Harry attended his father’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in May last year, where the anthem played, though it’s likely this is one of the only times Meghan has been present for the British national anthem.

It comes after Charles reportedly snubbed Harry during his son’s brief trip to London early last week.

UK media reports the father-and-son did not meet up at all despite Harry being in town to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Meghan and Harry have now returned home to California, where they live with their two children Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 2.

The couple are busy producing two new projects as part of their multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix, which they signed after stepping down as senior royals in early 2020.
