To chants of ‘God Save the King’, tens of thousands of people lined the streets of London as millions more worldwide watched their screens to witness the pomp and pageantry of the coronation of King Charles III.
After months of hype, the day arrived and it did not disappoint with world leaders and celebrities from more than 200 nations crammed into Westminster Abbey for the first coronation in 70 years.
The ceremony, heavy of symbolism and history, saw Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby announce “we crown a King to serve”.
“Jesus Christ was anointed not to be served, but to serve … The weight of the task given you today, Your Majesties, is only bearable by the spirit of God.”
Celebrities mingled with world leaders and pop stars, knights with banks, judges and charity workers in the pews of the Abbey in a colourful pageantry.
But there was as much interest in the historical proceedings as there was for vision of the body language and possible interactions between King Charles’ feuding sons Princes William and Harry.
The latter looked relaxed as he joked with other members of the royal family, despite being largely ostracised, but played no formal role in proceedings.
The Duke of Sussex took his seat in the third row for the coronation of his father the King, two rows behind his brother the Prince of Wales.
Here are some of the best pictures from the coronation so far.
