The Princess of Wales has delighted members of the Irish Guards in London with a sweet gesture in honour of St Patrick’s Day.

Kate, decked out head-to-toe in festive green with an Alexander McQueen coat dress and matching hat, put money behind the bar following the annual parade at Westminster.

According to The Sun, she told them it was “the least I could do” for those attending the afterparty.

The princess is colonel of the regiment but was forced to miss the Guards’ annual event last year as she underwent treatment for cancer.

Last year, the guardsmen gave three cheers in honour of the absent royal.

During Monday’s festivities, Kate chatted informally with soldiers at the barracks – while holding her own half-pint of Guinness – where she joked about her husband’s beard.

“These trends come and go. I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for,” she told them.

In a sit down chat with another group, Kate quizzed them on the challenges of deployment.

“Being able to manage that work-life balance – it’s tough,” she said.

One of the guardsmen later told The Sun that he was “kind of flustered” by the exchange.

“She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general,” Barry Loughlin explained.

“She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered. You could tell she had a genuine interest in us.”

Kate also gushed over her love of Australia to corporal Adam Hamilton, who hails from Down Under.

“I loved our trip to Australia. There are so many opportunities now to travel,” she told him.

“We tend to go further afield when it’s official visits. George always finds it fascinating that we’ve been there.”
