Kate Middleton’s uncle has offered a bizarre response to frenzied speculation over his niece’s whereabouts.
Gary Goldsmith, who is on this year’s Celebrity Big Brother UK, was point blank asked by fellow cast mate British actress Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, “Where is Kate?”
Despite rampant media reports about the Princess of Wales’ abdominal surgery in January and two-month disappearance from the public eye, Goldsmith, 58, was clearly unprepared to answer, fumbling through his response and doing little to quell conspiracy theories.
“So, because she doesn’t want to talk about it, the last thing I’m going to do is …” Goldsmith began, saying there was a “code of etiquette” in terms of speaking out about the British royal family.
Goldsmith then suggested something was amiss, adding, “If it’s announced, I’ll give you an opinion.”
The line immediately had viewers wondering why he’d have “an opinion” if Kate is only recovering from abdominal surgery.
Kate, 42, went in for surgery on January 16, which saw her remain under care in a London hospital for two weeks.
Despite Kensington Palace’s statement claiming the surgery was “planned”, suspicion arose after the Princess and husband Prince William were forced to pull the pin on a number of scheduled royal engagements, raising questions as to how “planned” the procedure was.
Further, a palace spokesperson said Kate would likely be out of action for months.
Up until a paparazzi photo taken on March 5, which saw the Princess sitting in the passenger seat of a car in Windsor with her mother Carole in the driver’s seat, Kate hadn’t been seen publicly since Christmas Day.
Last week, online speculation exploded as to Kate’s whereabouts and her mysterious surgery, prompting a range of conspiracy theories.
Author and royal expert Rachel Hawkins noted that “everything that is happening with Kate M is indeed very, very weird. Unprecedented, even”.
At the weekend, royal aides criticised the “madness of social media” for fuelling outlandish theories about the Princess’ health, while a spokesperson for William addressed the social media storm, telling People: “His focus is on work and not on social media.”
Kate is not expected to return to official duties until April.
Her absence comes amid a turbulent time for the royal family, as leading senior royals have also taken breaks from public duties.
In February, Buckingham Palace announced King Charles, 75, had an undisclosed form of cancer, shortly after he had surgery for an enlarged prostate.
Queen Camilla flew off on a private jet for an overseas holiday last week, just after Prince William abruptly pulled out of a service in Windsor for his godfather, Greece’s late King Constantine, due to a “personal matter”.
Goldsmith, who has been a public mouthpiece for the Middletons for years, is the younger brother of Kate’s mother Carole, and maintains a close relationship with the family.
He attended Prince William and Kate’s royal wedding in April 2011, as well as Pippa Middleton’s wedding in the English countryside in mid-2017.
As he entered the Celebrity Big Brother house, with the first episode premiering March 4, Goldsmith hinted his niece might tune in.
“She will be hiding behind the sofa if she is watching,” he said.
“It’ll be a nice one in a nice house somewhere, I can guarantee that.”
