The cast of the hit HBO Max series The White Lotus arrived in Australia over the weekend – and leading the way was its controversial star, Patrick Schwarzenegger.
The actor, who is the son of Hollywood heavyweight and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was seen touching down at Sydney International Airport on Sunday alongside Season 3 castmates Leslie Bibb and Natasha Rothwell, who braved the windy weather.
The trio are in the Harbour City to add star power at the premiere of their Max stablemate The Last of Us, with Season 2 of the post-apocalyptic drama launching at a red carpet event in Sydney on Wednesday night.
Schwarzenegger, Bibb and Rothwell will walk the red carpet at The State Theatre with The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, who also jetted into Sydney on Sunday.
The timely arrival coincides with the launch of Max, the premier streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery.
The platform brings together HBO’s most-loved films and TV series and it officially went live in Australia today.
Max will be the new Aussie home of HBO Originals and Max Originals, whose catalogues include hits such as House of the Dragon, Euphoria, Sex And the City spin-off And Just Like That and of course The Last of Us and The White Lotus.
Subscribers will also be able to enjoy films from Warner Bros Pictures, including recent blockbusters Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice and Twisters, alongside other fan favourites including Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the DC Universe.
The arrival of Schwarzenegger comes amid an online flurry after an incestuous storyline in The White Lotusaired.
In the episode, his rich-kid character Saxon shared a passionate kiss with his shy on-screen brother Lachlan (played by Sam Nivola) during a four-way, a plot line that divided the internet.
“I’m sorry. I love #TheWhiteLotus, but the brothers making out was WAY too much! Incest is gross! Was that really necessary to tell the story?” one wondered on X.
Meanwhile, another joked that it wasn’t a big deal, tweeting: “Maybe I spent too much time in frat houses in college but I didn’t think the gay incest in last night’s episode of ‘White Lotus’ was that shocking.”
Schwarzenegger has since spoken out about the scene, saying that there is a method to the madness behind series creator Mike White’s vision for Season 3.
“He wants to leave that up to the interpretation of the audience of what is happening,” Schwarzenegger said on the US Today show.
“Was a power shift happening? Is there a different power dynamic between him and Lochy? Is Lochy coming on to him? Is it the drugs? Is it the girls pressuring him? What is it? So, I think he leaves that open-ended for the audience to try to decipher.”
The actor explains that one of the themes is “you enter the White Lotus [hotel] as one person and you leave as another”.
“And I think that’s something that’s really relevant and prevalent for Saxon. Him walking into the White Lotus as the most confident and sure person of who he is, and everything gets completely questioned in his experience there.”
