IT happened 16 years ago but people were so grossed out by it, they were still talking about it more than a decade later, when it was finally explained.

Of course, we’re talking about THAT kiss, when a relatively unknown Angelina Jolie locked inflatable lips with her brother and date James Haven on the red carpet at the 2000 Oscars.

Much to the horror of fans on site and millions watching the event on TV around the world, the siblings shared an passionate, lingering kiss that left our eyes bleeding and our brains silently screaming “Ew, get a room! Wait, no! DON’T get a room!”

That night Jolie won Best Supporting Actor for Girl, Interrupted raised eyebrows by saying this in her acceptance speech: “I’m — I’m in shock. And I’m just so in love with my brother right now.

“He just held me and said he loved me and I know he’s so happy for me.”

The gross-out effect was somehow amplified by the fact that Haven is pretty much a male version of his sister, sharing the same generous lips and bunny-boiler eyes.

Their gothic his-and-hers outfits and vampiric complexions made it look like they’d gotten ready in the same bathroom, or in the same dungeon.

Anyway, their unholy locking of lips sparked speculation the pair shared a bond that went beyond brother and sister. Others wrote it off as a publicity stunt — albeit a pretty sick one.

The siblings later protested that their kiss and Jolie’s speech had been “misinterpreted”.

“I did not give Angie a French kiss, it was something simple and lovely,” Haven told reporters in 2007 when probed about the pash.

In fact, the “real story” behind the kiss didn't emerge until almost 14 years later when the siblings revealed they had spent the hours before the Oscars with their mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who had just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“The day she kissed Jamie at the Oscars, it was the first day Marcheline was treated for cancer. They left the hospital together and got ready together,” Bertrand’s best friend, Cis Rundle, told RadarOnline in 2014.

“Nobody in the world knew that they spent the day in the hospital. It was like, ‘Look where we’re at now.’ But the world saw something incestual. It was meant to be ‘Here we are.’ They only ever had each other. They had a very tight relationship with each other and their mother.”

Bertrand died from ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56.

Angelina and James had been estranged from their father, actor Jon Voight, for years before eventually reconciling with him. During their separation from him, they both dropped their father’s name in favour of their middle names, Jolie and Haven.
