Comic legend Eddie Murphy has referred to Australian actress Paige Butcher as his “wife”, sparking speculation they may have tied the knot.
The 63-year-old star used the word “wife” when talking about long-time partner Butcher while promoting his new film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
The comedy icon is the toast of Hollywood after bringing back the beloved Axel Foley character in the reboot of the classic 1984 film, which is directed by Australian Mark Molloy.
The star made his comments twice during an appearance on The New York Times podcast The Interview.
At one point during the podcast, Murphy told how he was “out of touch” with today’s rising stars.
“I used to be so hip, I used to know who everybody was, and now there’s just so much stuff,” said Murphy.
“[I] ask my wife, “Who’s this person? — ‘I don’t even know what’s going on.”
The star revealed that he and Perth-born Butcher have a cozy home life.
“I’m not ashamed to say it,” he said. “Every night at 6 o’clock, when I eat dinner, I watch Steve Harvey and Family Feud. On Tuesdays, I watch The Masked Singer.
“My wife and I, we watch all of those shows, the singing competitions and that kind of stuff. … Last year, I watched all of The Golden Bachelor.”
Murphy and 44-year-old Butcher share two children, Izzy, eight and Max, five.
Murphy also has eight older children — Bria, 34, Myles, 31, Shayne, 29, Zola, 24, and Bella, 21 — with ex-wife Nicole Mitchell.
He is also father to Eric, 34, from his relationship with former girlfriend Paulette McNeely; Christian, 33, from his relationship with Tamara Hood, and Angel, 17, whom he shares with former Spice Girl Melanie ‘Mel B’ Brown.
Murphy famously requested that Brown get a DNA test to prove he was Angel’s father — a move that devastated the singer — but is now a proud father to the teenage girl.
