Actress Sophie Turner has revealed how Taylor Swift’s kind-hearted gesture saved her in the fallout of her harrowing split from Joe Jonas.
Opening up to British Vogue, Games of Thrones star Turner lifted the lid on the devastating fallout of her divorce, admitting it brought on the “worst few days of (her) life” during which she didn’t know if she “was going to make it”.
In the candid interview, Turner opened up about her close friendship with Swift, who had herself previously dated singer Jonas in 2008.
The superstar came to Turner’s rescue, providing the actress and her two young daughters, Willa, three, and Delphine, 22 months, a place to stay in New York.
“Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year. I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space,” Turner said. “She really has a heart of gold.”
Page Six revealed last October that Swift had let Turner and her daughters stay rent-free at her $A75 million compound in Manhattan’s Tribeca after the British star initially checked into a hotel.
Despite initial claims that the separation would be “amicable” for the sake of their two young children, things with Jonas quickly turned sour amid allegations that the final straw had occurred when he caught Turner “doing something” on their Ring security camera.
“It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother – mum guilt is so real,” Turner told Vogue.
“I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier’.”
Turner described the “worst few days” of her life as she battled it out with the US-based Jonas over custody of their daughters.
“There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it,” she said.
“I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself.
“And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for.
“Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them.”
Turner also opened up to Vogue about her battles with depression, anxiety, and bulimia.
“I’m not very good at processing my emotions,” she said. “I lock them away and then they’ll bubble up in years to come in some form of depression or anxiety.
“Being a young girl, especially one growing up in the spotlight, you really judge yourself.”
The X-Men actress said she was no longer taking medication for her mental health issues.
“Not since I moved back to the UK,” Turner told Vogue.
“Which is great and also surprising, because I anticipated that I’d need to – now perhaps more than ever.
“There’s something about a community and a support system that I’ve never realised is so important up until now.
“And I think the reason I was on medication for so long is because I didn’t have those people with me.
“Now that I’m back home, I’m actually the happiest I’ve been in a really long time. I’m starting over again, rediscovering what I like to do, who I like to be with.”
Months on from the harrowing break-up, and based back in the UK, Turner revealed she’s now “the happiest” she’s been “in a really long time.”
“I’m starting over again, rediscovering what I like to do, who I like to be with,” she said.
