Australian superstar Cate Blanchett has ditched development plans for her multimillion Cornwall property following opposition from her neighbours
The Hollywood A-lister has been locked in a highly publicised battle with locals to develop a new access and parking area on land adjoining her $9.5m holiday house in Mawgan Porth.
But following local outrage, the Lord of the Rings star has withdrawn the plans in a letter to Cornwall Council, according to The Sun.
The actress, 54, and her husband Andrew Upton purchased and demolished a former cottage in the seaside town in 2020 to make way for the five-bedroom eco-home.
Land Registry records show that the couple bought the former cottage for £1.6m ($A3m), and then forked out £1.25 million ($A2.3m) a year later for the adjoining land, according to The Sun.
But neighbours have described the development proposal as a “blatant land grab” to stop another home going up next to theirs. Neighbours have also raised concerns about potential damage to coastal wildlife habitat.
Karen Burgess, who owns a neighbouring holiday home, claimed noise and disruption from the building works had ruined the holidays of guests and cost her £60,000 ($A115,000) in refunds and discounts. But the building designers engaged by the Hollywood couple says she is blaming the wrong people.
“Never before in the bay have we ever experienced such a blatant disregard for the people who flock here for their holidays and residents enjoyment of the area during the holiday season,” Ms Burgess told The Sun
“We thought the work was finally over and now there is a new application for ground works. This work should NOT be permitted during the holiday season.”
The architect firm behind the works denied Ms Burgess claims.
A spokesman said: “She cannot be referring to our clients’ property where there were no noisy works during the peak holiday period last year, once again, our clients’ property has been mistaken for other works going on in Mawgan Porth.”
The firm said it had been in regular communication with neighbours to ease their concerns.
A representative for the actress previously told The Sun: “Our clients purchased the land to preserve the environment and protect it from over development.
“They are merely reinstating a pre-existing accessway.”
The British seaside village has been dubbed ‘Hollywood-on-Sea’ and ‘Hollywood hills’ because of the growing number of celebrities buying up property there. They are said to include actors Jason Statham, Jamie Dornan, Stanley Tucci and Jason Momoa.
