Blake Lively refers to transgender people as ‘trannies’

Blake Lively is yet again feeling the wrath of the internet after she referred to transgender people as “trannies” in a series of resurfaced interviews.

The actress has been in the firing line since she began her promotional tour for her new movie It Ends With Us, with rumours she was embroiled in an on-set feud with director and co-star Justin Baldoni.

In the movie, Lively plays a woman who is in an abusive relationship with Baldoni’s character, but instead of drawing attention to the issue and highlighting resources available for those in domestic violence relationships in real life, the actress has been called “tone-deaf” and problematic for appearing to sell the film as a rom-com.

As Lively navigates the onslaught of negative press, her past interviews have now resurfaced. In a couple of previous interviews she did, the Gossip Girl star appeared to belittle reporters and ice them out with her answers.

Now, old footage and interviews have resurfaced of Lively repeatedly using a derogatory slur when talking about transgender people.

In one quote she gave Elle magazine in the 2000s, the actress said she wants to have daughters or “trannies” so they can inherit her designer wardrobe.

“I hope to have a few girls one day,” she began. “If not girls, they’d better be trannies. Because I have some amazing shoes and bags and stories that need to be appreciated.”

Lively went on to marry Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and together they share three girls, James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, and one son, Olin, 18 months.

The actress used the term again an interview with Allure magazine in 2009.

“I feel like a tranny a lot of the time. I don’t know, I’m ... large? They put me in six-inch heels and I tower over every man,” she said.

“I’ve got this long hair and lots of clothes and makeup on ... I just feel really big a lot of the time, and I’m surrounded by a lot of tiny people. I feel like a man sometimes.”

Lively once again used the slur in an on-camera interview with Gossip Girl co-star Leighton Meester for Nylon magazine. When asked about the rumoured feud between the pair, this is what Lively replied:

“If you read the gossip magazines, everybody is dating everyone, everybody hates everyone, everybody has had like tons of plastic surgery and they’re actually men and trannies,” she laughed. “It’s just like: you don’t listen to the rumours.”

The internet has since criticised the actress for her repeatedly problematic language, calling it

“awful”.

Of the Elle magazine quote she gave, one X user wrote: “I get what she was trying to say because someone better appreciate all that Vintage Versace she has. But she could have used different wording.”

Another user was the one to highlight Lively’s Nylon TV interview, tweeting: “She said it again here too. The early 2000s were a terrible time for language like this, so many people casually used these words.”

However, some were quick to come to Lively’s defence, saying she made those comments during a “different time”.

“I’m actually not mad at this at all. The word was thrown around a lot back in the day,” said one. “It was a different time. They used that word all the time on Sex and the City even in scenes starring actual trans people.”
