MORE than a year after Cate Blanchett told Julia Roberts to “hashtag suck it” during her 2014 Academy Awards acceptance speech, the actress has finally explained the bizarre quip.
Speaking on Jimmy KimmelLive! last night, Blanchett finally revealed the reason for making the inside joke on such a public stage.
The 45-year-old - who admitted to Kimmel that she didn’t even know what a hashtag was until Roberts explained it to her- said that the actresses agreed 2013 had been a particularly terrible year.
“If either of us had the good fortune to be up there, we had to kiss it on the ass … goodbye,” she said as she accepted her Best Actress Oscar for her role in Blue Jasmine.
So there you have it, “#SuckIt” wasn’t directed at Roberts herself, but rather the year 2013. 2015, you better be good to her.
