Casey Donovan will step into Whoopi Goldberg’s shoes to play Sister Deloris Van Cartier in the Sister Act stage musical.
It will be the celebrated singer and actor’s first lead role since she rose to national fame winning Australian Idol two decades ago.
“It is huge, it is exciting, it is all of the things,” Donovan said.
“It will be nice to get into the habit – excuse the pun. Deloris is sassy, she’s quick, she’s witty and she’s found herself back in the church, where she never ever thought she’d be.”
The musical is based on the 1992 film’s story of Deloris going into hiding in a nunnery after witnessing a mob murder.
Genevieve Lemon will be Mother Superior, a role played by Maggie Smith in the film.
“It will certainly always add pressure but I trust in myself and my abilities and my capabilities of learning from the best throughout my career,” Donovan said of her first lead role. “It is nerve-racking but I tend to rise to the challenge and I am looking forward to challenging myself in the best possible way.
“I grew up watching the movies, it was the movie of my childhood, and I must have put a little thing into the universe then that this was something that I wanted to do and here we are.”
