The Boy from Bankstown, Jordan Mailata, was thrilling American TV audiences long before his Super Bowl success with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 27-year-old who made history on Monday as the Eagles swooped to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in the NFL decider, was a hugely popular contestant two years ago on the US version of The Masked Singer.
Mailata performed as Thingamabob, cranking out Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi, before being unmasked after a ripping version of Ed Sheeran’s hit Perfect.
Judges including Blurred Lines singer Robin Thicke and actor Ken Jeong were stunned to learn of Mailata’s musical talent with host Nick Cannon saying he would never have known a 165kg NFL superstar could possess such range and ability.
“Man, I’ve been singing all my life,” Mailata told an audience of eight million people on Fox.
“I was a singer before I was any sort of athlete. I played Rugby in Australia and I decided four years ago to try and take a dip in the other side of the water in the NFL and it ended up paying off.
“If you want to do something, just do it. Have fun doing it as well.”
Wade Kelly, CEO at American Football Australia, said Mailata’s voice is also the standout on the Eagles’ annual Christmas album.
“It sells out every year and their fans love it,” Kelly said. “Jordan has a great voice on him.”
