Bling is back for the 67th Cannes Film Festival where it is all about fashion
FORGET the films, this week’s upcoming 67th Cannes Film Festival is all about the fashion and this year, the bigger the bling, the better.

THIS week heralds in the 67th Cannes Film Festival; a blurred vision of red carpet and champagne soirees, expensive boats and ocean views, paparazzi flashes and frilly dresses … and apparently film debuts?
I find it best to forget the flicks, fashionistas know that the real action happens on the iconic staircase, where the big question (bigger than what film will Harvey Weinstein buy the rights to) is what are the stars ascending the stairs wearing?
This year’s hotly tipped trend is a grand resurgence of Old Hollywood glamour and nonchalant elegance, which I prefer to translate as “bucket loads of bling.”
Chopard, the official partner, and the prettiest star in a supporting role at the festival will unveil their 67 piece collection which will be worn by the most glittering of a-listers.
Inspired by the charisma and voluptuous beauty of the actors of the famous Cinecitta studios, the world authority of red carpet bling will launch a resurgence in big, bold, diamond dazzlers.
Set to be a scene stealer, their main piece, entitled Riviera, will feature brilliant-cut, navette-cut and pear-cut gems with a foliage effect that will intertwine between the precious jewels.
It seems a lovely revolution in the jewellery department. For the past several years, stars seemed to favour small, delicate jewels: thin tennis bracelets, small stud or droplet earrings, dainty rings and fine chain necklaces.
It was a trend that I never comprehended; give me the chandelier earrings, or necklaces so heavy they bruise the décolletage, or an ensemble of cocktail rings so dazzling they radiate a fascinating aura of opulent seduction and make a wearer as plain as Naomi Watts start to resemble an Italian Countessa.
So I would like to say thank you Chopard for taking up the extraordinary challenge of debunking the style theory that we should always remove an accessory or piece of jewellery before leaving the house. I would like to thank you for piling on the diamonds, because lord knows those actors with their humble sterling-silver approach to the red carpet won’t.
