Bert and Patti Newton’s grandson Monty stars in Unisuper ad

Bert and Patti Newton’s grandson Monty has followed in their footsteps and made his television debut, featuring in a UniSuper commercial.

Bert Newton’s grandson, Monty Newton Welsh, has made his debut as a chat show host.

In what could be a glimpse into the future, Monty, 9, has appeared in a commercial for UniSuper as the host of The Never Too Late Show.

As Charlie, he is seen on a talk show set interviewing people.

Monty’s grandfather, Bert, was one of Australia’s most famous TV variety show hosts and performers.

Monty, whose father is Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh, said he was interested in swimming and acting.

“My career would be swimming, but my job would be acting,” he said.

“I would practise swimming and, you never know, I could get a movie and be a swimmer in it.”

As for the commercial, he said he loved the experience.

“It was a blast,” he said.

“I would love to do more telly because I am just following in my nan (Patti Newton) and Poppy’s footsteps.”

Monty recently appeared in his first film, Magic Beach, as a smuggler.

Patti Newton said Monty was a good listener and quick with the ad libs.

“There was no script, as such, with this commercial,” Patti said.

“Monty was the host of the chat show and he had two questions he had to ask each actor who was playing a guest on the couch, but he could ad lib anything else around those questions.

“He did a great job.”
